Being a misguided youth, I was once brainwashed into seeing this man as a force of evil and one who did great deal of damage to India.
But now, I have come to understand that if it wasn't for this man and his efforts, we wouldn't have a united India.
Happy Gandhi Jayanti.
Here's a great example. The Pope makes a claim about an "ontological difference" and a secular respondent doesn't even understand what he's talking about, only capable of thinking in terms of functional distinctiveness.
Some future PM of India will enter office with the mindset that he only has 5 years in office and doesn't give a shit about re-election or his party's electability in state elections. India will see its boldest reforms then.
What India has now is someone who wants to win the next general election and every state election till then, and be PM for basically forever. So he will not make any disruptive move and backpedal at the slightest pushback, and who thinks glacial progress is compensated for with "stability," even if at the cost of huge political concessions to pressure groups and the opposition.
This is not a good enough deal for an aspirational Indian who wants to experience prosperity within his lifetime (and not at some distant post-retirement age).
His conduct while in office was that of an enemy, and we wished nothing but destruction upon him.
But the bravery he displayed when facing the Pakistani Army, and America has shown that he was a true lion and deserves our respect.

getting a job and getting a girlfriend is pretty similar in how you have to convince people that hate you that you’re worthy of being exploited by them
This is not exactly a defense of John McCain but he was a product of a particular civilization that created the United States which was the former WASP upper class. The Bush family was also a product of this class which—notwithstanding many errors and crimes—was aware of itself as being an elite that owed the public a degree of noblesse oblige but more importantly owed itself a particular standard of good conduct and public propriety.
The MAGA people that have replaced them are not really a product of that civilization and do not seem to feel that any of its norms have any bearing upon them. That’s why you can see Trump and people who identify with him and his style of openly vulgar and corrupt behavior as basically barbarians and a force of anti-civilization in the United States.
Ironically people like Zohran, AOC, Jon Ossoff etc who are being derided as third worldist or some similar epithets are doing more to maintain the traditions of civic mindedness, honesty and humility that are supposed to characterize this civilization.
Why are some people so excited about remote prospect of Yogi Adityanath becoming PM ?
He's been a mediocre CM of UP, though better than Opposition.
But bigger problem is that he is a dehat coded person. That's unfortunate.
And this country doesn't need more dehat mindset.
