@SenTedCruz, a long-time friend of the Republic of Somaliland, has received President Abdirahman Mohamed "Irro" in Washington. The meeting reflects a friendship that has grown steadily stronger.

As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health Policy, Senator Cruz wrote to President Trump describing Somaliland as a critical security and diplomatic partner and urging the administration to grant it recognition. His letter described Somaliland as a stable, self-governing, democratic nation and pointed to its peaceful elections and its willingness to host a U.S. military presence near the Red Sea.

He has kept up that support. In June 2025, he said a serious conversation about U.S. recognition of Somaliland is necessary and long overdue. At a Senate hearing in December 2025, he called Somaliland a critical U.S. maritime security partner, citing its contribution to counterterrorism and anti-piracy missions along the Gulf of Aden. In April 2026, he voiced confidence that President Trump will recognize Somaliland before the end of his term.

The people and government of Somaliland thank Senator Cruz for his principled leadership, his courage, and his steadfast friendship. We look forward to deepening our partnership with the United States on security, trade, and shared democratic values.

A large Somaliland delegation, led by President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro, is preparing to travel to the United States within the next two weeks. The delegation includes government ministers, members of Parliament, senior officials, and other representatives.

Somaliland communities across the United States are also preparing to welcome their President on his first U.S. visit since taking office.

One particularly important point: members of the delegation are traveling on Somaliland passports for which the U.S. Embassy granted visas. This is a meaningful and encouraging development for Somaliland’s passport and its growing international engagement.

As @SenTedCruz has argued, Somaliland is a critical security and diplomatic partner for the United States, located in a highly strategic position and contributing to counterterrorism and maritime security. Following Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, the case for Washington to engage more decisively has become even stronger. Cruz has urged President Trump to recognise Somaliland, arguing that doing so would advance US national security interests.

With Somaliland’s leadership heading to Washington, the time has come for President Trump to act. Recognition would formalise a proven strategic partnership, strengthen America’s position in the Horn of Africa and Red Sea, and build on the strategic shift created by Israel’s recognition.

Others are already moving swiftly, with China responding directly to Senator Cruz’s call for US recognition of Somaliland. Washington should not let others move faster in shaping the strategic future of this critical region.
