Having MEMORY LOSS from depression and trauma is a weird experience because people don’t understand how scary it is when depression and trauma start affecting your memory. Like you really start forgetting whole moments of your life, conversations, things people told you, how you used to act, and even parts of yourself. It’s like your brain got so overwhelmed from surviving everything that it started deleting things just to protect you.
I think it's better to think of yourself as a not-so-good person who tries everyday to do right by people than to think of yourself as a good person who tries not to do wrong. To me, the former is freeing and more compatible with the human condition.
Mental illness can ruin every part of a person’s life. Your mind stops feeling safe. Relationships fall apart. People fear you, or leave. You lose sleep, trust, stability, sometimes even yourself. And despite all that pain, people still don’t understand how serious this is.
Life can be unkind and cruel at times but don’t allow those experiences to harden your heart and cause you to be in a permanent state of unhappiness and despair.
