Wtf is context engineering.

Last week i covered prompt engineering. but one word kept showing up at the end:

context engineering.

& it's the reason your AI forgets, loses the plot on long tasks, & gives worse answers the more you feed it.

But how does it work?

To understand Context, you first need to know the difference between:

prompt engineering: how you ask.

context engineering: what's in the room when you ask.

your prompt is just one thing the model reads, while the context is everything else it reads before it answers.

➤ What’s in the room:

when you send one message to an AI, your prompt isn’t all it sees.

before it replies, it loads:

⟣ the system prompt; hidden rules, sometimes thousands of tokens.
⟣ every tool it can use, described in full.
⟣ the whole conversation so far.
⟣ any files you uploaded.
⟣ outputs from tools it already ran.
⟣ then, finally, your message.

When you think about it, your actual prompt is often less than 10% of what the model reads.

So polishing your prompt is you polishing that 10%. While context is the other 90%, and the part actually steering the answer.

➤ Why context goes bad:

More context isn’t better.

..Because past a point it rots the output, and it rots in four ways:

⟣ Poisoning; a wrong fact slips in. every step after treats it as true, so the mistake compounds.

⟣ Distraction; the history gets so long the model stops thinking & just echoes what it already did.

⟣ Confusion; irrelevant info in the window leaks into the answer.

⟣ Clash; two parts of the context contradict each other, so the model picks wrong.

if you’ve watched an agent slowly lose the plot on a long task, you’ve watched one of these happen live.

➤ How do you fix this.

Usually four ways.

⟣ Write.

Save info outside the window so it survives, this is how platforms like Claude Code remembers your project between sessions.

⟣ Select.

Pull in only what’s relevant, when it’s relevant. hand the model the one book it needs, not the whole library.

⟣ Compress.

Summarize the old stuff before it eats the window. For example, Anthropic’s testing cut token use by 84% on long tasks this way, while keeping work alive that would’ve otherwise crashed.

⟣ Isolate.

split the job across separate agents, each with a clean window.

Write, select, compress, isolate.

Chroma tested 18 leading models this year, and every one got worse as you fed it more.

the million-token models started slipping around 300,000 tokens in, and the window was still wide open, so the model was already forgetting the middle.

Proving that a bigger window was never the fix.

cleaner context was.

➤ this is where harness comes in:

You might’ve seen people say “the harness beats the model.” this is what they mean.

You see, on its own, a model just generates text, while the harness is the machine around it that turns text into action.

it runs a loop; gather the right context, act on it, then verify the output. & when a step fails, it retries with better context instead of just stopping.

- context lives inside that loop.
- prompt lives inside context.

> zoom in, you’re at the prompt.
> zoom out, you’re at context.
> zoom out again, you’re at the harness.
