Separating the art from the artist is a lot harder when you are not Ye!
The international terminal of Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, was deliberately modeled after Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Lagos did not expand as planned.
History: The original Lagos Airport was built during World War II and was the base for West African Airways Corporation from 1947.
In the early 1970s, Gowon's government decided to build a new international terminal as part of a master plan to handle traffic up to the year 2000.
The contract was awarded at a cost of 240 million Naira.
Construction ran through the mid 1970s. It was renamed after Murtala Muhammed after his assassination in 1976, while still under construction.
The new terminal was officially opened on March 15, 1979 by General Olusegun Obasanjo.
At the opening, it was announced that it was modeled after Schiphol and was designed to handle 2.5 million passengers a year and 25 international airlines, with a 3,900 metre runway and its own 10,000 kilowatt power plant.
The idea was that Lagos would become a hub like Amsterdam.
A huge land area, almost the size of a local government, was acquired at Ikeja for this. The design was for several wings to be added later, just like Schiphol.
Schiphol grew to become the 5th busiest in Europe with 58 million passengers. Lagos did not expand as planned. That is why people still say MMIA is a small copy of Schiphol that was never completed.

How many times has Schiphol and Murtala Muhammed airport gone through expansion?
Schiphol has been expanded in major waves, not just once, since it started as a military mud field in 1916.
If you count the big rebuilds:
1. 1949 - First proper passenger terminal after World War II bombing. Decision to make Schiphol the main airport of Netherlands. The village of Rijk was demolished to expand.
2. 1967 - The famous single terminal that Lagos copied. Opened by Queen Juliana. This is the core that is still in use today as Departure Halls 1 and 2. Designed for jet age.
3. 1970 - A Pier, now C Pier, modified to take the Boeing 747.
4. 1975 to 1977 - New pier D, now F Pier, built for wide body jets. Oil crisis stopped some work in 1973.
5. 1978 - First underground railway station added, so airport connected to train.
6. 1991 to 1997 - Schiphol Plaza and air traffic control tower. The 1967 terminal pulled down partly to build Plaza shopping centre.
7. 2003 - Fifth runway, the Polderbaan. Plan for it started since 1970 but parliament only approved in 1995. Cost 340 million euros. Also Departure Lounge 1 renovated in 2005.
8. 2016 to 2024 - New Pier A and new terminal construction started, to add 14 million passengers capacity per year. Meant to be ready by 2023 but delayed.
9. 2025 - Royal Schiphol Group announced a 10 billion euro investment plan for next expansion, new brand and sustainability rebuild.
So from 1949 to now, at least 8 major expansion phases. The airport went from 4 runways in 1940 to 6 runways today, from one small 1949 building to one single terminal with 3 departure halls, and from thousands of passengers to 71.7 million in 2019.
Lagos Murtala Muhammed International, which copied the 1967 design in 1979, has had only 2 real expansions since then: MMA2 domestic in 2007 and the Chinese funded international E Wing in 2022, while Schiphol has had 8.
That is why Schiphol became 5th busiest in Europe and Lagos is still struggling with 6 million passengers.
Selective outrage
You hated the fact that you were asked to leave Lagos. You called it tribalism. You hated the fact that South Africans chased Nigerians out of South Africa. You called it Xenophobia.
What do you call chasing foreigners out of a place cos they sell cheaper than you ?
If you make excuses for the latter then you are a bloody hypocrite
Paying 7m to a blackmailer not to post your nudes is crazyyyyy.
Why are we so scared of nakedness??? didn’t we all see Aliko Dangote’s bumbum, did he die???
