MONSTA X’s Kihyun shared a heartwarming story about his fellow artists while teasing a vocal challenge for his solo comeback.

During the interview, he revealed that fellow MONSTA X member Shownu would be joining his challenge, joking:

“Shownu hyung said he’d take on the moral responsibility, and do it.”

A vocal challenge instead of a dance challenge

This time, Kihyun decided to focus on a vocal challenge rather than a dance challenge.

“A lot of people told me they don’t want to try singing the song. Not only is it difficult, but I think many people are also wondering how they should express it. So I’m planning to do a lot of vocal challenges instead.”

He also took the initiative in inviting artists himself.

“Usually requests go through staff, but I personally called K.Will sunbaenim. I told him, ‘Hyung, your younger brother has one wish.’ He gladly accepted, and I was really grateful.”

He added,

“I’ve been making good use of the connections I’ve built over the years while preparing all of this.”

How Shownu ended up doing the challenge

Kihyun also approached the MONSTA X members, but their responses weren’t exactly what he expected.

“I didn’t think the song would really suit Jooheon’s vocal tone. I.M is currently serving in the military, and for Hyungwon, the key is simply too high. So I figured the only people who could really do it were Minhyuk or Shownu hyung.”

He continued with a laugh:

“I sent a message in our group chat saying, ‘Shownu, Minhyuk, first come, first served for my vocal challenge.’ Neither of them replied for a while. I think they were both waiting to see what the other would do.”

In the end, Shownu volunteered first.

“Since I did the challenge for Shownu x Hyungwon, Shownu hyung said, ‘I’ll take the moral responsibility and do it.’”

He laughed again as he added,

“Then, just one or two minutes after Shownu finally replied in the group chat, Minhyuk suddenly messaged, ‘Hyung, if you’re too busy, let me know.’ I thought, ‘Look at this guy.’”

Standing out through vocals

With so many artists making comebacks in July, Kihyun also spoke about what makes his release different.

“I was honestly a little worried because it’s not really the kind of song that matches current music trends. But in another way, maybe that’s exactly what makes it different.”

He continued,

“During VOYAGER and YOUTH, I had a band with me on stage. This time, there’s no dance performance. Being able to present everything on stage with just my vocals is something different.”

He added,

“If I’m truly a good singer, then I believe that alone can make up for everything else. That’s why I’m taking good care of my voice so I can show everyone vocals of the highest quality.”

His thoughts on releasing a summer song

Kihyun also shared his honest concerns about the seasonal timing.

“When we decided to make ‘So Good’ the title track, I wondered if it might not really fit the season.”

But he ultimately concluded,

“Still, I believe a good song isn’t limited by the season. I also thought that if I sang it with enough freshness, people would naturally feel that refreshing vibe.”

Dreaming of a solo fan meeting and concert

Toward the end of the interview, Kihyun expressed his desire to hold solo events.

“I think I should hold a solo fan meeting or a solo concert at least once, since that’s what the fans want.”

He explained that the many festivals he’s participating in now are helping him prepare.

“I’m gaining experience through all these festivals, and I see them as experience that will help me achieve that goal.”

As for his goals for this promotion, he said,

“I think this album is honestly one of the most complete works I’ve ever made.”

He concluded,

“I want this to be a fun opportunity for more people to get to know who I am, and I’ll work hard.”

Kihyun’s second mini album BORDERLINE was released at 6 PM KST today through major music streaming platforms.
