If I were the Devil, I would not begin by changing laws. I would begin by changing language.
For whoever governs the names of things soon governs the judgments made about them.
I would not command evil openly. I would rename it until it no longer appeared evil. I would sand away every sharp edge of conscience with softer words, gentler phrases, and clever definitions. Sin would become self-expression. Vanity would become confidence. Pride would become self-esteem. Covetousness would become ambition. Envy would become justice. Lust would become authenticity. Sloth would become self-care. No appetite would remain without a flattering title.
Then I would persuade every soul that no authority stood above its own feelings. The old words—duty, obedience, repentance, humility, sacrifice—would sound foreign, even insulting. In their place I would enthrone one phrase above all others: "Trust yourself."
For a person who trusts only the self has already crowned the self.
I would teach that every inward impulse is a revelation, every desire an identity, every objection oppression, every correction abuse, every boundary violence. Soon no one would ask, "Is it true?" They would ask only, "How does it make me feel?"
I would not make people ignorant. I would make them certain.
For ignorance still listens. Certainty refuses.
I would convince each person that private judgment is superior to accumulated wisdom, that instinct outranks discipline, and that tradition deserves suspicion merely because it is old. Every correction would be received as an attack. Every disagreement as persecution. Every rebuke as proof of personal greatness.
Thus pride would no longer appear as pride. It would wear the robes of independence. Vanity would call itself courage. Defiance would call itself authenticity. The ego would never need to kneel because it would no longer acknowledge anything higher than itself.
Then I would no longer need to deceive each individual separately. They would repeat my work to one another through ordinary conversation. Every altered word would carry the new judgment within it. Every sentence would become a small ritual of inversion. Every repeated phrase would polish the mirror in which humanity admired itself.
When language itself became my liturgy, sermons would scarcely matter. Men would preach my doctrine without knowing my name. They would defend their own captivity as freedom because the words permitting escape would have been forgotten.
Only then would the work be complete: not when evil appeared good, but when good could no longer even be named.
