the AI world could do well to take a page from crypto’s book and support artists who are engaging with the tech in interesting ways, or would be able to do so with the right funding

so far it has the deluge of slop, loosely analogous to the million pfp projects, and it has the scaffolding for creative work. what it doesn’t have is anyone at the top who seems particularly interested in fostering a culture where artists can take big swings beyond just paying them $20-200 a month to generate images and code

for all of crypto’s foibles, this is something they did very well for a while and it was a massive boon to the industry while it lasted

If there is to be genuinely vital monumental sculpture made in this moment, we are going to have to take considerable time experimenting in a deliberate and dynamic way.

The default and may I add, rather visionless approach is just to attempt a superficial remake of the Greeks/Romans/Renaissance. This notion is heavily fuelled by AI today.

If this schematic is actually followed, you will have a Disneylandification taking place, a sort of ham-fisted artefact for entertainment purposes. Something akin to the decoration seen on a merry-go-round for children- from a distance and with eyes squinted it may just about pass, but when you get up close you see the peeling faux bronze paint and the ugly sun damaged plastic peering back at you.

Bringing great statues forward into this moment is not a problem that is solved by a few entrepreneurs over coffee, it equally isn't just a case of throwing buckets of money at well-equipped fabrication companies either. It will be a process of rebuilding tight-knit institutions that can nurture the required artistic talent and visionary genius to propel sculpture beyond the trappings of the mundane: an elite grouping of artists capable of getting into the aesthetic vocabulary of the past and then dreaming a fresh synthesis in our moment now. It will require time, dedication and honest aesthetic research and development.
