What if a drone could follow another drone simply by listening to the sound of flight?
After more than 2 years of work, I'm excited to share SonicFly, our new work on embodied passive aeroacoustic perception. SonicFly enables one UAV to estimate and follow another using only the leader’s naturally generated flight sound, without GPS sharing, inter-robot communication, active acoustic signaling, or external sensing infrastructure.
What sounded simple turned out to be a very challenging robotics problem. We went from designing the microphone array and understanding rotor acoustics to learning relative state and closing the loop for real outdoor aerial pursuit.

Kudos to our amazing students Yanbaihui (Evelyn) Liu, Ravi Prakash, Li-Yu (Patrick) Lo, and Nils Roede! 🚁🎧
I am also very grateful to our other lab members, in particular Tate Staples, Jiaxun Liu, and partner Ben Borger, who helped make this possible.
Let's face it, we've always had at least once this intrusive thought of ramming into that motorcycle doing dangerous maneuvers, going suicidal on you, driving in the opposite direction, scratching cars, carrying 7 people & making you nervous on the road..
But this is criminal.
First summer in 6 years where I visit for less than 10 days. I used to visit ever single summer for 4-6 weeks, but this year it was expensive, and I'm talking price gouging. I ask friends who work in the F&B business and their excuse to price hikes is that "we want a certain kind and type of clientele" which is a polite (and slightly racist) way to separate classes. Price of gasoline, generator bills, even groceries have gone up when compared to prices during Christmas, and I started to feel detached from most people living there, even from some of my close friends. There is a huge lack of manners that no education can never fix. It's evident in the way we treat with each other, in driving, whether it's road rage or cutting corners or driving/parking on the damn sidewalks, it's in the service sector from the restaurant having the same rotating menu or "concepts" that are 3x more expensive than they ought to be, to the service and parking staff (valet are a different kind of animal), to the highly charged political scene. You cannot have an opinion that is somewhere more nuanced, you are either a traitor or a terrorist-enabler (this applies to both sides), and all of that is nothing when you compare air quality, road safety (road quality, drunk drivers, people driving the opposite way of the flow of traffic), and I can list many other things.
We will never succeed as a nation because of our people, the problem is in us. We cling on to trivial tribal mindsets and refuse to live as a collective. Everything is designed to one-up each other and I refuse to participate in enabling such an economy. I will keep coming to visit during the off-peak season to see my family and friends, but that's pretty much the extent of it. It makes me sad that we will never be one united nation, and I can't imagine us collectively making it out of this quagmire.
