Verifiable Delay Function (VDF) is a cryptographic tool that is slow to compute but fast to verify.

It forces a computer to perform a specific number of sequential steps to get an output, which can then be checked instantly by anyone.

What's the importance in Web3

VDFs are crucial for creating a secure and unpredictable source of randomness in blockchain systems.
This randomness is essential for tasks like:
📍Randomly selecting validators in Proof-of-Stake blockchains (e.g., Ethereum).
📍Preventing attacks where a malicious user tries to predict the future state of the network.
📍Ensuring fairness in on-chain games and lotteries.
Companies/Protocols that use it:
📍Ethereum (Beacon Chain): Uses VDFs for its randomness beacon to select validators.
📍Chia Network: Relies on VDFs for its Proof of Space and Time consensus.
📍Algorand & Filecoin: Both have used VDFs in their consensus mechanisms to ensure security and decentralization.
