An animal abuse controversy that occurred in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, USA
In July 2025, Waddles was abandoned by its owner and taken to SPCA Tampa Bay. At the time, it already had health issues and weighed over 200 pounds
During its short stay at SPCA, videos circulated online showing that Waddles had severe sunburns, blistering skin, and injuries reportedly close to third-degree burns. The videos suggested that it may not have received adequate shade and shelter. The footage went viral on TikTok, triggering strong public backlash and protests
On July 31, 2025, Pinellas County Animal Services issued an animal cruelty citation against SPCA, accusing the organization of failing to provide necessary shelter, which resulted in Waddles suffering severe skin injuries
SPCA later paid a fine of approximately $223, and the court initially treated the payment as a guilty plea. However, SPCA later filed a request to withdraw the plea, claiming it did not understand the consequences and that its legal advice had been improper. The judge approved the request, and the case returned to the legal process
Waddles was later transferred to the rescue organization Pork Butt Pastures. It has now fully recovered, weighs around 350 pounds, and lives on a farm in Lithia with access to water, shade, and companionship
Current case development:
Around June 2026, SPCA filed a motion to dismiss the case, arguing that as an organization holding veterinary licenses, it should be protected from animal cruelty charges under Florida law
However, this week, the judge rejected the motion, ruling that SPCA is an “institutional facility” rather than an individual veterinarian, meaning it does not qualify for such legal immunity
The case will now proceed to a bench trial (non-jury trial), scheduled for July 29, 2026, in Courtroom 1 of the Pinellas County Courthouse
