Had a few people reach out regarding IP news so thought I would throw out a quick update.
I was able to locate the wonderful artist who worked on the Buttcoin logo 15 years ago and get a release form officially signed which should make things much easier to approve. She’s very talented, has done work for companies like Discord, and I would hope to work with her in the future for any planned art or merch.
Official paperwork submitted by my legal team is still working its way through the copyright office. I have regular check-ins to make sure everything is good but you can’t expedite this part. It’s a process that takes months, and all you can do is respond to any questions they may have.
TL;DR: Things are moving and they will be done when they’re done.
Buttcoin turns 15 years old today!
It's officially our #ButtcoinBirthday.
Back in early 2011, someone on a dying internet comedy forum, in a thread about a newly created digital currency called "Bitcoin", asked a simple question:
"Has anyone called them Buttcoins yet?"
15 years ago today, I decided to buy a domain, get a logo created, set up a website, a Twitter account, a subreddit and a Facebook page to document the early days of crypto. There was so much happening so quickly, much of it hilarious, that I wanted to share it with the world.
We are an important part of the crypto landscape. We shone a light on the industry, dug up scams and lies, and also found funny moments to share and major events to highlight.
We grew to become a major part of not just early crypto culture, but of internet history as well:
- We reported on the rise and fall of Mt. Gox.
- We broke the news of the fall of MyBitcoin, the first major exchange hack.
- We had Satoshi's name and logo replaced with ours on the official Bitcoin code repository
- We had write-up in major publications such as Wired, TechCrunch and the Washington Post.
- We led to the downfall of major crypto hardware maker Butterfly Labs
- We had our website seized by the FTC and our names entered into government record
Over the years the Twitter account grew and and had many interactions with people like Vitalik, cobie and other important members of crypto.
The subreddit grew to a quarter million members, growing faster that nearly all other crypto subreddits at the time.
And the website was preserved as an important part of historical documentation.
And in January of this year, we launched the $Buttcoin token to celebrate the history, the culture, and build that fun community aspect of Buttcoin again. What we've accomplished in that short 4 month window, with thousands of people joining us, is nothing short of incredible.
So thank you to everyone for 15 wonderful years of being a talking cartoon butt. I can't wait to see what the next 15 hold!
(I tried to get an ice cream cake with a picture of a butt on it but I'm now banned from my Baskin Robbins for life)
The best thing about time is that it changes.
And those who don’t respect timing get punished the most.
$BUTTCOIN got slapped hard during the dip by the faders.
Now the faders will get slapped when it makes a new ATH.
Inevitable.
