2. Let us use CDC vouchers to book hotels.
We're still supporting local businesses.
With… potential economic benefits.

3. Gamify sex.
Achievements. Badges. Titles. Quest guides.
“Local Legend”: done in every town in Singapore.
“Coast to Coast Completionist.”
“Nature Explorer.”

Singaporeans will compete over literally anything.
Give us achievements and a leaderboard and suddenly everyone has aim for.

4. Strava, but for mating.
Streaks. Personal bests. Monthly challenges.
Imagine opening the app and seeing:
“Desmond has been more active than you this week.”
Cannot lose to Desmond.

5. Baby making speedruns.
How quickly can you go from Baby #1 → Baby #2?
Show proof of pregnancy, and get sponsorships, rebates and extra benefits.

6. Tie COE rebates to children.
1 kid = 10%
2 kids = 30%
3 kids = 50%
You want that Land Rover? You want that Alphard?
The nation would like to discuss a mutually beneficial arrangement.

7. BTO Pregnancy Fast Pass.
Pregnant? Move up the queue.
2 kids? Express lane.
3 kids? HDB delivers the keys, a hamper and a handwritten thank-you note from the nation.

8. Maternity ward loyalty programme.
Same like frequent flyer, but better.

Priority check in. Lounge access. Complimentary upgrade where available.

9. Annual couples' hotel vouchers for parents.
Once a year, the kids go to a nanny and mum and dad go for a staycation.
Official purpose: “strengthening marriages.” Because couples need “bonding time in privacy”.

10. Master bedrooms come with extra soundproofing.
For better sleep, obviously.
Better rest. More privacy. Higher productivity.
Creating conducive environments that contribute to the national KPI.

11. Subsidize aphrodisiacs.
Why keep telling Singaporeans to make babies when we can just… nudge them in the right direction.

Chocolates, oysters and wine at half price… The more they eat, the more “ready” they become.

Just quietly set the mood and then the other head gets to work.

This is quite something: Takashi Kawakami, the principal foreign policy advisor to the Japanese PM, says that if Trump wins the presidential election it will be an opportunity for Japan to "finally become independent".

He said that given Trump's "America First" mantra, he will have little interest in U.S.-Japan or U.S.-South Korea relations and that as a result "Japan will have to conduct its own foreign policy [and] find a skillful way to manage the power balance with China, Russia and North Korea... This should be a golden opportunity for Japan. We can take back the initiative and become a truly independent country."

Kawakami also expressed frustration that 85% of Japan's skies are, in effect, "America's skies" (a large portion of the airspace has been reserved for the exclusive use of American forces since the end of World War II) and that "U.S. military bases account for a substantial acreage of land, too" - a status quo he called "abnormal."

I've myself argued the exact same point for Europe since the very first Trump administration: when Trump was threatening to exit NATO, Europe should immediately have taken him at his word and jumped on this amazing opportunity to take over NATO and thereby remove the stranglehold that the US has over the continent. By the same occasion, they might have been able to prevent the Ukraine war by throwing the Americans out and stop it being the "CIA theme park" described by journalist John Pilger (https://t.co/L4KqrBvBMV).

Unfortunately it looks like Europeans are a bit (even a lot) slower to understand geopolitics than the rest of the world... Everyone else around the world sees them as clueless vassals being sacrificed on the altar of the American empire but they themselves are largely oblivious to it. Heck ask most EU politicians and they're immensely worried at the notion that they might one day be independent, it's something they largely want to prevent, which is terrifyingly depressing...

The best explanation I've ever listened to as to why the "Thucydides trap" doesn't apply when it comes to China, and why China doesn't have Western-like hegemonic aspirations.

By George Yeo, former foreign minister of Singapore and imho the single best analyst of China anywhere in the world (I always religiously listen to his talks).

His main argument is that it's foolish to apply a Western prism that it the legacy of the Greek Peloponnesian war to predict Chinese behavior: you need to look at China's own history and culture. And China has always shown that it wishes to remain a homogeneous society which means its very DNA prevents it from acting like the West by reshaping the world in its image, since that would necessarily imply that China transforms its own culture to be universally applicable.

I 100% agree with this. The world that China wants is a world where it and other countries are NOT forced to reshape themselves in the West's image, not a world where China wants to reshape others. That's anathema to Chinese culture: at no point in China's history were there Chinese missionaries roaming the world trying to convert others to Daoism or Chinese Buddhism, they just don't do this stuff because they understand that if you want to reshape others you first need to reshape yourself and thereby lose your homogeneity and uniqueness. On the contrary, throughout their history, all of China's efforts have always been on preserving itself from outside influence and interference, which is the very reason why it is the longest-lasting civilization in history.
