Eminem turned down an $8,000,000 offer for an 8-minute performance at the World Cup without even negotiating:
In late 2022, Qatar approached 50 Cent with a massive budget for a joint World Cup performance.
The total offer was $9,000,000 for one short appearance. 50 Cent would get $1,000,000, while Eminem would get $8,000,000 for just 8 minutes on stage.
That’s $1,000,000 per minute.
50 Cent called Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, thinking it was an easy payday. Rosenberg took the offer to Eminem and called back ten minutes later:
"Marshall said no."
50 Cent couldn’t believe it. There was no counter-offer, no request for private jets, and no scheduling conflict.
Eminem had no interest in traveling halfway across the world for a corporate event, no matter how many millions were attached to it.
Michael Jackson bought the rights to 251 Beatles songs for $47.5M. Years later, he received $95M upfront from Sony while keeping a 50% stake. His estate sold that stake for $750M.
In 1981, Paul McCartney invited Michael Jackson to his home in England.
Over dinner, Paul talked about buying song rights and gave Jackson some advice:
"Hit singles fade. Owning the copyright is forever."
Jackson smiled and said:
"One day, I’ll buy yours."
Paul thought it was a joke. It wasn’t.
In 1984, ATV Music went up for sale. The company held the rights to 251 Beatles classics.
McCartney hesitated, trying to negotiate the price down.
Jackson made an all-cash offer of $47.5M and bought the entire catalog.
Paul was furious. He now had to pay Jackson royalties just to sing his own songs on tour.
After 30 years of successful hits, McCartney wrote to Jackson asking for a higher percentage of the royalties.
Jackson’s response was cold:
"Oh well, that’s just business, Paul."
In 1995, Jackson merged the catalog with Sony. He received $95M upfront and kept a 50% stake in the new company.
In 2016, his estate sold that stake to Sony for $750M.
Never teach your business model to a rival over dinner.
@lorneseth calling them gifts offered her little protection once shelly challenged where the money came from, even if the relationship was entirely platonic
