IN 2022, SAM BANKMAN-FRIED TURNED $16,000,000,000 IN TOKENS HIS OWN EXCHANGE HAD CREATED INTO A $10,000,000,000 LOAN FROM HIMSELF.
FTX had minted FTT and Serum tokens, then marked them up on its own books until they showed $16 billion in collateral value.
Bankman-Fried went looking for a bank willing to lend against that collateral. No regulated lender would touch it.
So he turned to FTX. He applied for a loan from his own exchange and approved it himself.
On a regulated exchange, that much collateral would typically be worth about 1% of its value in real cash. He gave himself $10 billion instead.
FTX filed for bankruptcy that November.
Michael Saylor breaks down the loan in the video below.
@0xBenjamine Yeah, if you break it down like that the numbers are wild. Normal collateral haircut would've capped it around 160m, he just skipped that step and approved 10b to himself same day FTX books showed the paper value.
IN 2007, JEROME KERVIEL WAS REPORTEDLY SITTING ON β¬1,400,000,000 IN HIDDEN TRADING PROFIT AT SOCIETE GENERALE. WEEKS LATER THE BANK LOST β¬4,900,000,000 UNWINDING HIS POSITIONS
Kerviel was a junior trader who built unauthorized positions far beyond his limits, hiding them from the bank with forged documents
When Societe Generale discovered the trades in January 2008, it unwound them in three days, one of the largest trading losses in banking history
A French court found him guilty, sentenced him to three years in prison, and ordered him to repay the full β¬4,900,000,000
His lawyer argued the bank knew about his methods as long as he was profitable and only turned on him once the trades became losses
In the video below, his lawyer says: "it's incomprehensible it's a judgment that says he alone was responsible for everything"
The court rejected that, ruling Societe Generale had no knowledge of Kerviel's fraud or the forged documents behind it
@danakabradpitt Thats wild to think about, land and labor alone eat most of that million now, and he just stayed in the same spot while everyone else kept upgrading
WARREN BUFFETT BOUGHT HIS OMAHA HOUSE IN 1958 FOR $31,500 AND STILL LIVES THERE

In the video below, a colleague notes he bought the house for a very modest price in 1958
WARREN BUFFETT IS SITTING ON $380,000,000,000 IN CASH. IN 60 YEARS AT BERKSHIRE, HE SAYS ONLY ABOUT FIVE WERE WORTH BUYING INTO.
Buffett cites Tom Watson Sr. of IBM as the reason.
IBM ran three different businesses, including time clocks. Two of the three failed, so IBM stayed with the one that worked.
In the video below, Buffett says: "I'm smarter spots and I stay around those spots."
