@Tyler_McV I think the Gamers Nexus video with component comparable DIY builds shows that based soley on part/$ the device really isn't as overpriced as people make it out to be. Performance/$ is another story but you pay the same premium with gaming laptops and everyone just accepts that
@Tyler_McV So in summary, admittedly first world problems but I genuinely do feel like this fits a niche. Not an expert in custom-builts but I also think it'd be very difficult to make something in this form factor by yourself. Could be wrong, but I think there is $ value in that
@jnvcia Like, recently I've been experimenting with bgfx since I was fed up writing raw vulkan, and was basically preventing me from learning how to do literally anything else in the engine, just kept going down the rabbit hole with trying to do messy multithreaded stuff
@jnvcia I'd probably be interested in contributing. mostly a graphics person skillwise by virtue of my job but i've been trying to learn how to do all the other subsystem stuff in an engine on my own projects.
@FighterFPS@WitchersLibrary What does that mean? What is the “black box”? I’ve worked with source builds of unreal for several years and I have no idea what that means in this context.
@MilenialFulcrum@luciascarlet I mean, I don’t work at Apple but I can’t imagine all of these AAA ports were done because the publisher c-suite saw it was a good revenue opportunity. Probably had some incentive, if you get what I mean.
@MilenialFulcrum@luciascarlet I mean just take a look at some of the recent Mac presentations in the past few years, there’s often a dedicated gaming section
@sighaboutlife@SoftEngineer@nonaseki also just persistence. articles like “a trip down the graphics pipeline” are basically mostly indecipherable even for someone who has done babys first opengl tutorial and require revisiting periodically. you get a little something more out of it each time, theres many aha moments
@sighaboutlife@SoftEngineer@nonaseki it’s a combination of hidden gem webpages and blog posts, lots of experimenting and profiling, and word-of-mouth from guys who have been around long enough. the latter 2 specifically made much easier if you work in the industry
