tokenized stock markets forming financial market onchain

onchain RWA market cap grew from $4.3B at the start of 2025 to nearly $30B by July 2026

during the same period:
→ DeFi TVL fell 32.5%
→ total crypto market cap declined by $750B
→ crypto trading vol dropped 52% from its 2025 peak

that tells me the growth is not purely driven by crypto sentiment

exchanges also have a clear economic reason to push this market

when $BTC and other major crypto assets become less volatile, speculative turnover slows

adding stocks, indices & commodities gives exchanges another source of vol + fee rev without waiting for the next crypto rally

and the pivot is already visible across nearly every major platform:

→ @RobinhoodCrypto: Stock Tokens on Robinhood Chain, with 24/7 trading and DeFi integrations
→ @binance: bStocks issued as BEP-20 assets on BNB
→ @krakenfx: 131 @xStocksFi covering US stocks and ETFs across multiple chains

these are not identical products

some provide spot exposure backed by securities

others are total-return trackers, certificates or perpetual contracts

their custody, dividends, redemption rights and legal claims can differ significantly

but the direction is consistent

major exchanges are no longer positioning themselves as crypto-only venues

they are building RWA product stacks around tokenized equities, ETFs, indices, commodities and derivatives

i see this as a shift in their business models, not a temporary listing trend

but what interests me more is what happens once these assets move fully onchain

a stock inside a brokerage account is mainly held, sold or used for limited margin

a tokenized stock can potentially be:

- traded 24/7
- transferred between platforms
- supplied as liquidity
- deposited into lending markets
- used as collateral
- paired with other onchain assets
- integrated into structured products

there is also a smaller and more speculative layer forming around stock-themed memecoins

on Robinhood, markets such as $AI/NVDA have paired memes directly with tokenized stocks instead of WETH or stablecoins

they are still part of the sector’s early market structure because they bring attention, traders and liquidity toward stock tokens

the perp market is developing even faster

RWA volume on perp DEXs reached a record $141B in July, up 513% YTD

public equities currently dominate open interest because traders want leveraged, 24/7 access to names such as NVDA, TSLA and AAPL

this is very different from traditional derivatives markets

right now, onchain finance is mainly importing the assets most familiar to crypto traders

it has not yet recreated the broader risk-management system used by banks, funds and corporations

there are also major structural differences between products

AAPLx, AAPLon, rAAPL and XAAPL may all reference Apple, but they can have different:

- legal claims
- custody arrangements
- dividend treatment
- redemption paths
- liquidity sources
- issuer risks

the same price exposure does not mean the same financial instrument

that is where the next phase becomes more serious

building reliable liquidity, transparent backing, consistent corporate-action handling, accurate 24/7 pricing and safe collateral markets is hard

i think crypto exchanges are becoming a new access, distribution and settlement layer for them
