Where it’s helpful:
- No leader, no single point of failure
- Scales well, each node talks to only few peers
- Finding dead nodes in cluster quickly
- Sharing cluster state (who’s alive, who owns what data)
- Still works even if some messages get lost
Cassandra and Dynamo-style DBs are gossiping all the time behind me and I didn’t know, lol 🥲
Today I learned something funny 😄
Servers also do gossip!!
It’s called “Gossip Protocol”.
In distributed system every node picks few random nodes and gossip about others. Those nodes tell few more. Within some rounds, whole cluster knows the news.
No leader, no central server.

sometimes “df -h” is terrifying…
Especially in production servers 🥲
