Case study: Can you really follow your passion in India?
P.S. Read till end before you jump to conclusions.
After yesterdays JEE results, a lot of people have been calling me regarding counselling.
one guy is getting BITS P Pilani campus CSE, but got ~6k rank.
Says usko CSE nhi jaana, math pasand nhi hai. Wants to go in mechanical/civil.
And wants to work in robotics.
I said you are a fool to think that you can work in mech core in India and make your living.
My dad is a mechanical engineer in Tata and says all their work is just maintenance. Even if he takes initiative to make new machinery in-house companies refuse.
For example he and his junior engineer once made a conveyer belt loader in about 10 lakhs which they earlier used to import from germany for about 18 crores.
And what did he get? extra increment of 9k per year.
Why would you waste your potential in India?
Unless you are willing to go outside, I dont think there is any scope of core branches in India.
Do you agree?
Also its another thing that not a single person in my college from mech/civil was happy with their branch.
Almost 70-80% went in tech. If you choose civil or mech in IITs over BITS P CSE, and then you decide to go in mechanical, its just foolish i guess.
But at the same time I feel bad that we live in a country where talent isnt rewarded enough for letting people pursue their passion?
Now someone like Abhineet will come and say that do your own thing in mech. Well, some things need to be seen statistically. Yes, take risks. But you need to account for statistics as well.
The junior engineer with whom my dad made that machine, left the job as he felt the same. 9 year since that day, he has 5 crores of turnover still makes almost nothing in profits. He built unique plants for a lot of chemical companies, but tenders take months to pass, flow of capital is very slow, and honestly all these traditional companies have a lot of corrupt people who passes tenders of other corrupt vendors for their own profit.
So after that case, I believe you cannot do what you want in India.
