@Datascientist1_ Back in the day, ppl used to introduce themselves as surname 1st, then 1st name, so others could easily identify their family & what work they do.
Most surnames reflected the kind of work their family did, so it was practical. They followed it from long time, It's old habit...

@Datascientist1_ But shifted to the common format (First-Middle- Surname), so this practice is changing now.

This change, mandated by the state education department in June 2025, addresses technical issues in generating national IDs (like the Apaar ID) and simplifies official record-keeping.

@Datascientist1_ Actually the real reason is simple — in Gujarat the traditional name format is Surname → First Name → Middle Name.
So schools used surname for roll numbers because that’s literally the first part of the name here. Nothing to do with caste, just the naming system.
