@draken_coady@LickshotLippy My teens and husband have done that test! It’s not just about focus but also about impulsivity, because there is generally one letter/symbol that you are NOT supposed to press when prompted. It checks whether you’ve pressed that button more often than a neurotypical person.
@AJamesMcCarthy We drove to totality in April 2024 and it was truly astounding. An experience I’ll never forget, and no photo or video does it Justice.
@garonnevik Highly recommend “If Your Kid Eats This Book, Everything Will Still Be Okay” by Dr. Lara Zibners. Both hilariously funny and deeply reassuring. My mom bought it for me before I had my second and it was SO helpful.
@UnpackingALife This was my absolute favourite part of the environmental storytelling of this game, especially paired with the section where you as the main character are actively making space for your new partner’s things!
@soncharm@walkdotdv Of course some explanation of terms are necessary in math! No one is born knowing what the word addition or the = symbol means. “Add 8 to 9” or “give me the sum of the following numbers” feel differently because we already know what’s meant by them.
@soncharm@walkdotdv Rather than say “I don’t understand this method so I wonder what its intent is” people quickly move to “this method is stupid because I learned it differently.” But many of my friends who struggled with math would have benefited enormously from how kids learn math today.
@soncharm@walkdotdv Make a 10 is an underlying principle - we use a base 10 system after all!
Dad doesn’t understand this method and that must be very frustrating because he wants to help. But I find it interesting how many people respond to not understand what’s meant with anger, no curiosity 1/2
@soncharm@walkdotdv Many math teaching methods don’t actually explain the underlying properties. I learned math through memorized drills, so if I forgot a fact I didn’t know what to do. When my kids learned make 10 they also memorized facts but if they forgot they could still find the answer.
@lumaxingout@BrainbowManic@Feking_sketchin@HillcrestCardCo The “make a 10” strategy gets to an answer with less memorization. Yes, some math facts need to be memorized - making 10 requires memorized sums. But, it shows kids that there is a logic behind the math facts that they can extrapolate to complicated questions.
@soncharm@walkdotdv The “make a ten” idea does extrapolate to more complex math! Using your example of 128+129: make a ten by going to 130 + 127. Remembering the powers of 2 is another strategy that gets the right answer, but this will get you there if you’ve forgotten the powers of 2.
@SESKILL@BrainbowManic@Feking_sketchin@HillcrestCardCo I don’t think people who memorize math facts are dumb! But memorization is limiting, unfortunately - you can’t memorize every equation you’ll ever encounter. Math thinking is actually a skill that can be taught and improved, if taught properly and kids are given proper support.
@BrainbowManic@Feking_sketchin@HillcrestCardCo How so? It may be confusing if you learned a different way, but that doesn’t make it a poor technique.
This method just formalizes what people often do unconsciously. If you’ve ever seen one of the posts about “how do you add 47+28” you’ll essentially see versions of this.
@BrainbowManic@Feking_sketchin@HillcrestCardCo Because what do you do if you don’t remember what 8+9 equals? The goal is to teach kids how to think through a problem so that they can tackle more difficult ones in future. The goal is to demystify how numbers work and encourage critical thinking and number sense.
@Feking_sketchin@HillcrestCardCo It’s easier to add a number to 10 than to add the two numbers given. So, you know 8+2=10. If you take the 2 you need to make 10 from the other number, suddenly you have a quickly solvable question: what is 10+7?
Keep in mind that teachers have explained this to the kids!
@Mark__Lawrence Cover art AND punctuation? Well lah-di-dah Mr. Author 😂 In all seriousness I’ve been wanting to read this one for a while so this would be awesome!
@ADHDForReal A water flosser helped my youngest, as did an electric toothbrush with a gentle brushing mode. It’s not perfect but it’s manageable to get a better clean than a manual brush.
@adamtotscomix Any chance you’ll also put it on your Patreon? I’m not sure I want to join another platform but love your work and wouldn’t want to miss out!
