A pregnant Muslim woman was kicked in the stomach in a Co-op car park in Milton Keynes.

A Muslim man who stepped in to stop an attempted rape on a Sunderland street has been praised after the attacker was jailed.

Ian Hudson, 42, targeted a woman walking through the Monkwearmouth area on December 30 last year. He followed her along the road, approached her from behind, then overpowered her and assaulted her both physically and sexually.

Hamzah Albar, now 24, was passing by when he witnessed the attack. He immediately confronted Hudson, causing him to flee. Hamzah chased after him, caught up with him, and bravely restrained him by sitting on his hands and feet. During the struggle, Hudson punched Hamzah in the face. Hamzah then flagged down two passing motorists who called the police.

Once arrested, Hudson assaulted an officer and exposed himself while in custody.

Hudson, who has no fixed abode, was later found guilty at Newcastle Crown Court of attempted rape, non-fatal strangulation, sexual assault, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of common assault against Hamzah. He had already pleaded guilty to additional offences of exposure and assaulting a police constable.

On Thursday, November 13, he was sentenced to nine years in prison for all eight offences. He will also spend a further five years on licence after his release due to being classed as a dangerous offender.
