Real learning is hard. And it can feel “fun,” but not because of gamification.
From teaching math at Brilliant, we’ve seen that classic gamification barely moves time-on-task.
The real gains come from the content’s game design: clear goals ("Which quadrant is this in?"), varied situations and difficulty, the right degrees of freedom, and instant responsive feedback.
These create tight learning loops that drive understanding and a sense of progress, which are a lot more powerful than collecting points.
