My portfolio menu is an amuse-bouche of $SERV. An appetizer of $OUST. $NVDA for the main course and a sliver of $SGOV for the dips. Canโt decide on dessert ๐ค
Is this a @ServeRobotics robot hiding under an @Underdog wrap? ๐ค
Came across it chilling in Little Tokyo today.
$SERV is actively building advertising into its business with exterior branding + experiential campaigns, its ad platform is claiming 150M+ monthly impressions.
I wonder what the additional revenue potential is?
A robot that swims underwater, then flies straight out of it! ๐ฆข
Water is 1,000 times denser than air. Moving through one or the other normally means two completely different machines.
Around 100 bird species disagree. Loons, gulls, puffins and petrels dive after prey, then leap back into the sky.
Engineers at MIT and EPFL built a robot that does the same thing.
It's a flapping-wing aerial-aquatic vehicle, it weighs under 300 grams, and the results are out in Science. @RaphZufferey who runs the AURA Lab at MIT, is lead author.
A waterproof motor drives a crankshaft that pumps two flexible wings up and down at set frequencies, and a motorised tail changes angle to climb or dive.
The wing membranes are coated with hydrophobic nanoparticles so water sheds off them.
Wing flexibility turned out to be the whole game. Flexible enough to keep flapping amplitude low in water, firm enough to hold the robot up in air.
โ Swims at almost 1 m/s flapping at around 5 Hz
โ Flies at around 6 m/s at a similar frequency, close to real diving birds
โ The water-to-air transition needs a pitch of around 70ยฐ. Shallower and the wingtips catch the surface, steeper and it falls back in
My favourite finding is the one about feet. Puffins and ducks paddle at the surface to get airborne, so the team assumed a robot would need something equivalent.
It doesn't. Wings and tail alone are enough.

@Dietl_rd Would be nice to think that - Amazon are definitely in a position to support/use other western tech but I have zero confidence in them doing anything other than what suits themselves the best.
A connected vehicle can only react to what it knows is there, and a car cannot see a pedestrian stepping out from behind a parked truck or around a blind corner. Ouster BlueCity gives it that missing view. The same lidar system a city uses for signal actuation and safety analytics also feeds the roadside unit, turning each intersection into a V2X safety hub.
It detects the precise position, speed, and path of every road user in 3D and broadcasts standardized safety messages to connected vehicles: Basic Safety Messages and Personal Safety Messages under SAE J2735, and the newer SAE J3224 sensor data sharing message that combines every road user into one comprehensive picture. A vehicle is warned about a pedestrian or a hazard before it ever comes into view.

I have no spare money at the moment โฆ Do I sell a couple of $NVDA shares to purchase a few more $OUST just to spread it around a bit? I genuinely do not have a clue. My trade game is weak lol

This robot moves like something that evolved to survive.
And honestly, it looks like something from another planet.
$NVDA says physical AI could ultimately be 10x larger than digital AI as ~90% of the worldโs actions still happen in the physical world.
Jensen Huang says โevery industrial company will become a robotics companyโ with the opportunity growing to $100B over the next decade.
$NVDA has invested in photonics startup @iPronics , which is developing networking technology designed to connect hundreds of thousands of chips inside AI data centers. Another small piece of NVIDIAโs increasingly enormous infrastructure strategy.
Mining. Agriculture. Robotics. Industrial Automation. Smart Infrastructureโฆ
All Different industries with the same underlying need: Machines that can accurately understand the physical worldโฆ $OUST has its fingers in all of these pies.
