In the cold dawn of 1950s Detroit, a young mother named Sonya walked out into the winter air long before the streetlights clicked off. Decades later, inside a sterile operating theater at Johns Hopkins Hospital, a seventy-person medical team stood motionless around five-month-old infant twins conjoined at the back of the skull. It was an operation no surgical team in history had ever successfully completed, where the margin between survival and death was measured in fractions of a millimeter.

Every eye in the room was fixed on the chief of pediatric neurosurgery, Dr. Ben Carson.

His hands were completely steady.
