Why are Tibetans missing from the coverage of one of the biggest disasters of our time?

The world is watching the devastation in Nepal, with journalists on the ground documenting the human stories in real time. But across the border in Tibet, there is a media and information black hole.

Tibetans cannot freely speak, journalists cannot freely enter, and Beijing controls what the world sees. The Tibetan voice is being silenced when it matters most.

As one powerful voice put it: “China sitting on the roof of the world and in the water tower of Asia is a threat to peace and security and human life on this planet.”

This disaster must be a wake-up call. The international community must demand unfettered access to Tibet, independent reporting, transparency and accountability.

When disaster strikes, people should be free to mourn, speak and tell the world what happened. In Tibet, the CCP treats that basic human right as a threat.

Too many headlines describe this catastrophe as devastation in “Nepal and China.” Let’s be clear: Tibet was hit too.

As this gentleman rightly reminds us, Tibet is not just a location on a Chinese map. It is a homeland with its own people, language, culture, traditions and thousands of years of history.

And yet, while reporters can document the devastation in Nepal, access to Tibet remains heavily restricted. Foreign journalists cannot freely enter, investigate or speak with affected Tibetans. That silence leaves a dangerous gap in the story.

We must not allow Beijing’s terminology to define how the world sees this tragedy. It happened in Nepal and Tibet — not “Western China,” not “China’s Tibet,” and not “Xizang.”

“Tibet” is not a political inconvenience to be renamed away. It is the name of a people, a homeland and an identity.

The world watched a wall of water tear through the Nepal–Tibet border. Nepal’s suffering is being documented. Rescue crews are visible. Survivors have a voice.

But Tibet?

A media black hole. Independent journalists cannot freely enter. Tibetans cannot safely tell the world what they are seeing. The Chinese government controls the narrative while an entire people endure the disaster largely out of sight.

As one powerful warning puts it: “It’s a media black hole. It’s an information black hole in Tibet. International media is not allowed in. Tibetans are not allowed out. They can’t share the information. And the Chinese government controls the entire thing.”

This is bigger than one flood. Tibet is the Roof of the World and Asia’s Water Tower, home to the headwaters of rivers that sustain millions.

“China sitting on the roof of the world and in the water tower of Asia is a threat to peace and security and human life on this planet.”

The international community must demand access to Tibet, independent reporting, transparency and accountability.

Tibetans are not missing from this story. Their voices are being kept out.

When disaster strikes, rescue should never become a propaganda show.

Claims circulating online allege that some Chinese rescue footage from the Tibet side is being staged or selectively presented for propaganda, while Nepali soldiers and rescuers are carrying out the brutal, life saving work on their own side of the border.

These claims still need independent verification. But one thing should not be controversial: people deserve the truth, rescuers deserve honest recognition, and victims deserve more than a carefully managed narrative.

Real Madrid honoured victims of the devastating Nepal–Tibet floods with a minute of silence. China’s response? Pressure, outrage and a demand to erase the word “Tibet.”

CCP state media attacked the club, invoked its Chinese fan base and commercial interests, and pushed it to replace “Tibet” with Beijing’s preferred “Xizang.” The post was later deleted.

This is how Beijing operates: use economic leverage to bully global institutions into repeating its political narrative.

A humanitarian tragedy should not be rewritten to satisfy the CCP. Tibet is Tibet. And no amount of Chinese pressure can erase its name, history or people.
