What the actual defense strategy was:
Self-defense / unlawful detention argument: The deputy (Meagan McCarthy) had no reasonable suspicion of criminal activity when she arrived and tried to detain/pat down Young. Therefore, her actions were unlawful, and Young’s resistance (including beating her and taking her gun) was justified. Jury instructions reinforced that officers must have reasonable suspicion to detain someone.

Lack of intent on the serious charges: The bystander video “looks bad at first glance” (Maline’s words) but was an “illusion.” Forensics, bullet trajectory, and body-cam evidence showed Young fired the gun in a northeast direction (while walking away), not toward the deputy who had run south. This undermined attempted murder and assault with a firearm on a peace officer.
