Fiction isn't reality, but its mouthpiece. An extension of human ideas, experience and values, a medium to explore it. Fiction is not an excuse for lazy misogynist framing & harmful narrative. To tell a story is to assume responsibility. What responsibility is this story taking?
Class & power dynamics present on screen uphold systemic reality; a woman's autonomy and safety is expendable, 'even' at the hands of another woman, so long as the aggressor has a position of power/access to power that the other does not; wealth, information, or simply sobriety.>
We know better, but those who don't, in an already isolated, fascist world, are enabled by its abandonment of social responsibility. We didn't get here randomly. Institutionally, the sexualization& aestheticizing of rape is elemental to patriarchal values, image, manifest etc.>
Not only do some fans inadvertently channel rape-apologia by how they consistently buy into this romanticization, they can't tell what consent even 'looks like', and do not care. Consent is rarely present on screen, but sex is, 'romance' is, so it grooms the mind to disconnect.>
Thai GL was modeled after BL (which in origin sometimes did have sum to say about power& consent). Much of it sensualizes rape, intentional or not. It works hard to consistently 'blur the lines' narratively, its industry built upon patriarchal foundations, or co-opted by them.>
