“Today the Holy Church solemnly glorifies the honorable Dormition or translation of the Mother of God from earth to heaven. A wonderful translation – she died without serious illness, peacefully. Her soul is taken up in the divine hands of Her Son and carried up into the heavenly abode, accompanied by the sweet singing of angels.
And then, her most pure body is transferred by the apostles to Gethsemane where it is honorably buried, and on the third day it is resurrected and taken up to heaven. You see this on the icon of the Dormition of the Theotokos. On it is represented the life-bearing body of the Theotokos laying on a bier, surrounded by the apostles and hierarchs, and in the center of the icon the Lord holding in His hands the most pure soul of the Theotokos.
The translation of the Mother of God is a paradigm of the translation in general of the souls of Christians to the other world.”
— Saint John of Kronstadt, Sermon on the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos 📖
🔸 August 15 - The Dormition of the Mother of God 🔸
Today, we celebrate the Great Feast of the Dormition (Falling Asleep) of the Most Holy Theotokos and her bodily translation into heaven. This is one of the most joyous feasts of the Church, for the All-Holy Virgin, as the Mother of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, is exalted above all the saints. The Theotokos was all-holy and sinless, not in the absolute sense which belongs to God alone, but through the abiding grace of the Holy Spirit working within her.
Nevertheless, she reposed like all humanity, not voluntarily as her Son did, but by the necessity of her mortal human nature which is indivisibly bound up with the corruption of this world. Having been foretold of her departure from this life three days prior by the Archangel Gabriel, the Theotokos returned to her home and prepared for this event, praying that the Apostles would be notified. At the time of her repose, the Apostles, who were preaching all throughout the world, were miraculously transported to Jerusalem to behold this event.
The body of the Theotokos was taken in a solemn procession, and was laid in a tomb near the Garden of Gethsemane. According to God’s providence, the Apostle Thomas arrived three days after her repose and was greatly saddened that he had not been present. When the Apostles opened the tomb so that Thomas could venerate her body, they found it empty. The Church thus celebrates that the Mother of God was taken bodily into heaven and glorified by her Son.
The icon of the Dormition shows the Theotokos lying upon her deathbed, surrounded by the grieving Apostles. On either side, Saint Peter censes her body, while Saint Paul bows reverently before her. But the most beautiful scene in this icon is Christ, who, having descended in glory and surrounded by angels, receives the pure soul of His Mother which is represented by a small child clothed in white.
This beautiful image reverses the familiar scene of the Mother of God holding the infant Christ in her arms. She who once carried and embraced Him as a Child is now herself received into the arms of her Son and God, who bears her soul into His heavenly Kingdom.
🔸 The Angel Chopping off a Man’s Hands in Icons of the Dormition 🪽🫱🗡️🔸
In icons of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, a striking scene is often visible: an angel with a sword severing the hands of a man. According to Holy Tradition, after the repose of the Theotokos, the grieving Apostles carried her most pure body in solemn procession from Zion through Jerusalem to the Garden of Gethsemane, where she was to be laid in the tomb.
As this grand procession passed through Jerusalem, those who opposed Christ were angered by the honour and reverence being shown to His Mother. Among them was a Jewish priest Jephonias, who, filled with hostility, rushed forward and attempted to overturn the bier upon which the body of the Most Holy Theotokos rested. The moment he grasped the bier, however, the Archangel Michael appeared and struck with his sword, severing his hands and leaving them attached to the bier.
Confronted by this terrible wonder, Jephonias repented and confessed his faith in Christ and reverence for His Mother. Through the intercession of the Theotokos, his hands were miraculously restored, and he joined the procession as a believer. The earliest known surviving depictions of this scene in iconography are from Cappadocia and date back to the 9th century.
This depiction also presents a profound symbolic idea: We must not attempt to grasp arrogantly at the mysteries of the divine economy with our sin-ridden hands, as though they were subject to our authority or comprehension. Rather, like the repentant Jephonias, we are called to humble ourselves and approach these mysteries with faith and reverence.
