Atheist: How can I become a Christian?

Provisionist: Believe the gospel.

Atheist: Great. What is the gospel?

Provisionist: You must hear it so you can believe. “How are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?” Romans 10:14.

Atheist: Has everyone heard it?

Provisionist: No. Billions have lived and died without ever hearing it.

Atheist: Could they believe a gospel they never heard?

Provisionist: No.

Atheist: So God genuinely offers salvation to everyone, but providentially places billions where they will never hear the offer?

Provisionist: Well…

Provisionist: I explain why Calvinism makes evangelism pointless.

An Ethiopian eunuch is riding through the desert reading Isaiah. He does not understand what he is reading.

So what does God do?

“An angel of the Lord said to Philip, ‘Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.’” Acts 8:26

Philip goes.

Then the Spirit says, “Go over and join this chariot.” Acts 8:29.

Philip asks whether the eunuch understands Isaiah.

The eunuch replies, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” Acts 8:31.

Then Philip “told him the good news about Jesus.” Acts 8:35.

Notice the order.

The man needs to hear.

God sends the preacher.

The preacher proclaims Christ.

The man believes.

The Calvinist does not say, “Evangelism is pointless because God saves the elect.”

He says God ordains both the end and the means, and Acts 8 gives us a remarkable picture of exactly that.

The Ethiopian needed a preacher, so God sent him one.

Other than Scripture, the clearest early witness for what people now call “total depravity” is Augustine. Against Pelagius, he taught that original sin corrupts human nature and the will, so no one comes to God apart from an act of divine grace.

Dort (1618–19) defined the doctrine as the corruption of man, not under the exact name “total depravity.” Calvin called it “hereditary corruption” amongst other terms. TULIP, as a memory tool, shows up around 1905. That’s when the term was popularized.

Sproul was right that “total” is a clumsy word for the doctrine. He preferred “radical corruption.” Not that man is as evil as he can possibly be. That sin reaches the root: mind, will, and heart. That’s why Eph 2:1 says dead, and why the remedy is a new heart from the Holy Spirit, not a little more education or behavior modification.
