How Tottenham Exposed Man United’s Biggest Weakness 👀⚽
Manchester United’s pressing structure left them vulnerable against Tottenham, with problems starting from their 4-2-4 shape at goal kicks. The first line lacked the aggression needed to disrupt build-up consistently, allowing Spurs to find passing options and progress into spaces behind the press.
Once Tottenham bypassed the initial pressure, the gaps between United’s midfield and defensive lines became even more difficult to manage. United’s midfielders struggled to step out at the right moments without exposing the space behind them, leaving Spurs opportunities to receive between the lines and turn towards goal. 🧠
The numerical balance in midfield added to the problem. Tottenham could create 3v2 situations, giving the player in possession multiple passing options while forcing United’s midfielders to cover too much ground. When one player was drawn towards the ball, another space opened up for Spurs to exploit. 📐
These structural weaknesses made United vulnerable whenever their first pressing line was bypassed. Without sufficient pressure on the ball or compact distances between the lines, a single missed assignment could expose large spaces and leave the defence facing direct attacks.
Breaking down these moments with Once Sport Analyser helps coaches identify pressing issues, numerical disadvantages and the movements that open spaces between the lines. 🔍📊

🔵🔴 How Barça Beat Levante’s Press
Levante’s aggressive approach against Barcelona created an interesting tactical problem: how to progress when the opponent presses forward while keeping the spaces around the ball compact.
Barcelona’s solution centred on creating different threats at different levels. Central movements, width and rotations constantly changed defensive references, making it difficult for Levante to press without opening another passing option.
Fermín López was key to this. His movements between the lines gave Barça an extra presence behind the midfield pressure. When he received or carried the ball forward, defenders had to choose between stepping out and protecting the space behind them. That hesitation could open the next passing lane.
Lamine Yamal and Raphinha added another layer by maintaining width and threatening the outside of the block. Their positioning stopped Levante from simply collapsing towards the centre. When defenders moved inside, the wide players could become the next progression option. ⚡
One sequence from the opening stages shows the mechanism clearly: Barcelona broke the first line, Fermín progressed centrally and the movement around him created space for the wide players. The value came from the relationship between the movements, rather than one individual action.
🧠 The key lesson is how Barça manipulate defensive decisions. One player attracts pressure, another occupies the space created, and the ball moves quickly into the next available lane.

What can FC Porto take from the Manchester City game ahead of Real Betis? 🔍⚽
The 0–2 result tells only part of the story. Porto’s performance at the Estádio do Dragão offered plenty to analyse, particularly in the way Francesco Farioli’s side defended and tried to progress against one of Europe’s strongest pressing and possession teams.
Porto often looked to press with three players high, using specific triggers to close passing lanes and force City away from their preferred build-up routes. When the first line was bypassed, the compactness behind it became crucial, allowing Porto to recover their shape and protect the central areas. 🔒
With the ball, however, City’s structure created different problems. Porto finished with just 36% possession and five shots, with several of their attacking moments coming from transitions rather than sustained possession. The challenge was finding the free player between the lines and creating enough space to progress beyond City’s first defensive pressure. 📊
This is where video analysis becomes particularly valuable. By breaking the game down, specific patterns can be isolated, tagged and revisited: pressing triggers, build-up solutions, rotations, transition moments and the spaces Porto managed to attack. It gives coaches a clearer picture of what happened in each phase. 🎥
With Real Betis next in the Champions League, these details become useful reference points for understanding how Porto’s game model responds to different opponents. 🧠

🧠 The Back Pass That Triggers The Press
A midfielder receiving with his back to goal can create one of the clearest moments for the defending team to accelerate its pressure.
The trigger becomes even more interesting when that player chooses to play a return pass. The backwards movement of the ball can signal the pressing team to step forward together, reducing the opponent’s time and space before they can reorganise.
The first defender can use the pass as the cue to jump, while teammates close the nearby options. The objective is to make the next receiver uncomfortable immediately, either forcing another backwards pass or creating the conditions to win the ball. ⚡
Timing is crucial. If the first player jumps too early, the midfielder may still have time to turn or find another option. If the press starts as the return pass is played, however, the receiving player is often facing forward but has very little time to act.
There is also an important detail for the team in possession. A return pass does not automatically mean the attack has been stopped. If the player receiving the ball initially recognises the pressure, the backwards pass can be used to invite the press and free a third player elsewhere. The outcome depends on what happens around the ball.
That makes the situation a fascinating tactical battle: the same return pass can either become the trigger to press or the mechanism to escape the press, depending on the positioning and reactions of the players around it.
For coaches and analysts, the key is recognising the moment when the opponent becomes vulnerable: back to goal, limited options, return pass, then coordinated pressure.

⚡ The Science Behind Brentford’s Transitions
Brentford’s transition game under Keith Andrews is built before the ball is even won. Their rest-attack structure gives them a clear advantage when possession changes, with several players already positioned to attack forward immediately.
One important detail is the positioning of the front line. Brentford often narrow their wide attackers around the centre-forward, creating short distances for combinations while keeping runners ready to attack the channels. When one forward drops towards the ball, another can immediately run beyond the defensive line.
This creates a simple but effective problem for defenders: follow the dropping player or protect the space behind? Whichever decision is made can open the next option.
The midfield structure also matters. Players stay close enough to support the first action after the regain, allowing Brentford to play forward quickly while still having options underneath the ball. Their vertical passing is therefore supported by the positioning around the receiver, rather than relying on an isolated long pass.
🧠 The interesting part of Brentford’s transitions is the preparation. The counterattack starts with where players are positioned before possession changes, how they occupy defenders and how quickly the team can recognise the space that becomes available.
For coaches and analysts, it is a useful reminder that effective transitions are often designed before the transition actually begins.

🧠 When The Midfielder Becomes The Pressing Trigger
A midfielder receiving the ball with his back to play can create one of the best moments to activate a coordinated press. With limited vision and fewer options to play forward, the receiver becomes much more vulnerable to pressure arriving from behind. ⚡
The interesting part is that the pressing team can actually help create this situation. By controlling the available passing options, the team can encourage the opponent to find the midfielder and then use his body position as the signal to jump.
Once the pass is played, the nearest player attacks from the midfielder's blind side while the surrounding players adjust their positions to remove the easiest escape routes. The return pass becomes particularly important, as closing that option can leave the receiver isolated with very little time to decide what to do next.
The winger can also play an important role by moving from the outside towards the inside, helping guide the opponent's build-up towards the area where the pressing team wants to apply pressure.
Timing is what makes the difference. Press too early and the opponent can play around the pressure; press too late and the midfielder has time to turn and attack the space ahead of him. When the movement is synchronised, a seemingly normal pass into midfield can become the starting point for winning possession in a dangerous area. 🎯
These are the details that make an effective pressing structure so difficult to play against. The players are not simply reacting to where the ball goes; they are recognising the opponent's body position, using it as a trigger and moving together to make the next action uncomfortable.
Would this be one of your pressing triggers? 👇

⚽ How England Can Turn Pressing Pressure Into Attacking Space
Ahead of England’s meeting with Croatia, Thomas Tuchel’s approach to building against aggressive pressing offers an interesting tactical reference, particularly following the defeat to Spain.
One solution is to use the striker to manipulate the defensive line. By dropping towards midfield, the forward can force a centre-back to decide whether to follow or maintain the defensive shape. If the defender steps out, space opens behind the line.
This movement creates the conditions for a precise, line-breaking pass to bypass the first pressing wave. The next action is crucial: England’s advancing players must immediately attack the space before the opposition can recover its defensive structure.
Against Argentina’s compact 4-4-2 diamond, the mechanism was illustrated through a 40m pass that exploited the space created by the striker’s movement. The principle is particularly relevant against opponents who press aggressively and leave space behind their defensive line.
Against Croatia, England could look to use similar movements to create progression options, particularly when the opposition commits players forward. The key is coordinating the striker’s movement with the timing of the pass and the forward runs around him.
If the striker drops without attracting a defender, the space behind may remain protected. If the pass arrives too late, the defensive line has time to recover. The advantage comes from synchronising movement, passing and depth.
For coaches and analysts, this provides a useful example of how build-up decisions can be adapted to the opponent’s pressing behaviour, turning pressure into opportunities to progress. 🧠

🧱 The Defensive Line: Step, Balance & Control Depth
A defensive line is constantly balancing two demands: engaging the opponent and protecting the space behind. The key is recognising when to step, when to slide across and when to hold the line.
In a mid-block, this becomes particularly important. When one defender jumps to engage, the rest of the line must react with him, adjusting their positions to maintain balance and protect the depth. The movement is collective rather than an isolated action. ⚡
Coritiba provide a good example of this, combining pressing jumps with lateral balance and depth control. As the ball moves, the line shifts while defenders continue monitoring runners and the space behind them.
With Benfica, the focus can be seen in how the defensive block protects width while maintaining control of depth. When the ball reaches the flank, the line moves across together without losing its connection or allowing space to open behind.
Chelsea offer a more aggressive version, with the defensive line stepping forward when the right trigger appears. The challenge is coordinating those jumps with the rest of the line so that pressure on the ball does not create opportunities behind it.
Across all three examples, the principle remains the same: every movement of the defensive line has to be connected. The ball, the pressure on the ball and the movement of the opposition determine whether the next action should be a jump, a shift or a deeper position.
For coaches and analysts, these details show how defensive stability is built through timing, coordination and constant control of space. 🧠

⚠️ When Defensive Decisions Break The Structure
Defensive errors are rarely isolated. A poor decision from one player can quickly expose spaces for the entire team when it is not aligned with the collective defensive structure.
One of the most important principles is controlling depth according to the pressure on the ball. When a team presses high, the defensive line must stay connected to that pressure. If the line drops too far, the space between the pressing players and defenders becomes available for an opponent to receive and turn.
Monterrey’s defensive structure against Toluca provides a useful example. Their high press created pressure on the build-up, but excessive depth from the centre-back opened a passing lane for the forward. The problem was therefore not simply the defender’s position; it was the relationship between the pressure and the depth behind it.
Another key detail is the timing of defensive jumps. An aggressive step forward can eliminate an opponent before they receive, but only when the defender has the right timing and sufficient cover behind the action. If the anticipation is mistimed, the defender can be bypassed and the space behind immediately becomes the next attacking target.
The same Monterrey-Toluca example illustrates this principle. A centre-back stepped forward to intercept, but the opponent escaped the challenge and was able to carry the ball into the space that had been left unprotected.
🧠 For coaches and analysts, these moments highlight how line height, depth control, cover and timing are interconnected. The quality of an individual defensive action depends heavily on what the rest of the structure is doing around it.
