“I’m in my little suit, and we go to what they call a volume, which is a space that has cameras all over it. You learn all the choreography, you learn the fight, and then you go in there.

I wasn’t doing it with Josh. I was doing it with a stuntman. I had to get beat, and he’s never been beaten before, so…” laughs “…that’s how you do it.

Anne Hathaway says pop music wasn’t considered “real music” in her house growing up.

Anne Hathaway: Pop wasn’t, uh, especially now the way that I appreciate it… pop wasn’t rated in my house growing up. Like, real singers did Broadway.

Jon Caramanica: Yeah.

Anne Hathaway: And that was… so much of my early musical exposure was theater-based. My older brother was super into rap, then he got into straight-edge hardcore. Obviously, I loved my older brother, so I was listening to that.

Joe Coscarelli: A real tri-state kid.

Anne Hathaway: (laughs) Absolutely!

Jon Caramanica: Don’t watch the show. We have a lot to learn. (laughter)

Anne Hathaway: Then when I was in high school, that was when the pop princesses happened, and TRL was huge. My stop after school was always going home and watching TRL. That was such an amazing music video era. I felt very confused because I knew that I loved Britney Spears so much. I couldn’t stop singing “…Baby One More Time” or get it out of my head.

Anne Hathaway says she turned down similar roles after The Devil Wears Prada.

Anne Hathaway: I just remember thinking to myself, “That’s the way you are seen. That is what you have to resist right now.”

Interviewer: Mm. Interesting.

Anne Hathaway: And so I actually chose not to pursue… I actually did walk away from that because I thought, if you do that, you’ll have a really wonderful career for a few years.

Interviewer: A predictable, one-note career doing the same thing over…

Anne Hathaway: Yeah. And you’ll have a great time, and you’ll make the movies that, you know… but I also saw that it could be a case of diminishing returns, you know, because I just got so lucky with those two. They were such high watermarks.

Interviewer: Yeah.

Anne Hathaway: That I thought, if I make others and they’re sort of the ersatz version of that, how am I going to feel? So I thought, “Okay, we’re going to engage the full brake system.” And you’re just going to focus on directors. That’s it.
