A Cult Classic Reborn: Dark Shadows
The standout announcement of the showcase was the early development of a new Dark Shadows animated series. Reimagining the beloved 1960s supernatural soap opera that famously introduced the vampire Barnabas Collins, this project signals Warner Bros. Animation's aggressive expansion into new thematic territories. Lisa Holdsworth, known for her work on A Discovery of Witches and Call the Midwife, will serve as executive producer and showrunner for the supernatural family saga.

Expanding the DC Animated Universe

Following the world premiere of Batman: Knightfall, the first instalment of a planned feature trilogy, earlier in the festival, Warner Bros. Animation detailed several major DC-centric projects catering to varying demographics and tones. Absolute Batman, an animated adaptation of the popular comic book series, has officially received a development greenlight. Joker: Laugh Riot, DC's foray into anime, has been given a series greenlight, marking a stylistic shift for the franchise's animation. Krypto, a new series currently in development, is set to feature a massive roster of iconic DC heroes and villains across a variety of storytelling styles.

Puppetry, Culinary Revenge, and Family Comedy

Beyond superheroes and vampires, Warner Bros. Animation showcased an eclectic mix of upcoming series. Attendees were treated to extensive footage of Hit Squad, a puppet TV series inspired by a late-1970s Gerry Anderson concept. Co-produced with Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe, the show blends practical puppetry with CG enhancements to deliver a unique, action-packed dark humour experience.
Additionally, Warner Bros. Animation highlighted their collaboration with Adult Swim on the character-driven family comedy Keeping Up With the Joneses, focusing heavily on original storytelling.
However, the most anticipated reveal for many was the screening of the first episode of Get Jiro. Seven years in the making, this brutal, post-apocalyptic revenge tale based on the graphic novel co-created by the late Anthony Bourdain and Joel Rose promises to be a visual and thematic feast for adult animation fans.
