1/ In the early 1990s, the Tashkent-based photographer Alexander Shepelin was taking pictures of what was going on in the ‘Mustaqillik’ (Independence) Square, trying to capture the transitional period, the time when very few understood what they were to expect thereafter.

5/ and why ‘Mustaqillik’ continues to be associated more with a holiday, fountains and spacious squares rather than actual political and social changes in the country.

The exhibition will feature works created between 2018 and 2021.
