@TheBean_Daddy@Nonesuch00@GR_DONKIN the comprehensive rules are very explicit about this, opening hand effects happen before the first turn of the game. while most judges will be accommodating of a mistake like this, the correct time to do use an opening hand effect, is objectively, before either player draws.
@TheBean_Daddy@Nonesuch00@GR_DONKIN this is how opening hand effects have always worked, they are considered pregame actions. the best example i can think of is with the chancellor cycle from New Phyrexia, but the leylines also use the same rules. gatherer rulings are often updated for consistency and re-dated.
//some of my favorite moments from the Nod Krai story is when
Team Nod Krai: "yeah Nefer may not agree to help..."
Nefer: " I won't help"
Team: "bring out the secret weapon"
Lauma (the secret weapon): "Hi Nefer"
Nefer: 😳😳😳 "ok I'll help"
