📌 China Expands Maritime Pressure Around Taiwan

China continues to maintain naval and Coast Guard activity around Taiwan, while PLA air activity remains comparatively low. Between 2 and 3 September, Taiwan detected five PLAN ships and three Chinese official vessels, but no PLA aircraft. August recorded 125 PLA ADIZ incursions, well below the levels seen in 2024 and 2025.

The more important development is east of Taiwan. Beijing has continued Coast Guard patrols in the area and completed a major marine geophysical survey during August. Independent analysis indicates that China is probably moving toward a permanent Coast Guard presence east of Taiwan. This gives Beijing a way to normalize state activity around Taiwan's eastern maritime approaches and strengthen its ability to isolate the island.

Taiwan is responding by expanding asymmetric capabilities. Taipei has proposed another US$4.6 billion in defence spending, including drones, coastal surveillance systems, unmanned boats and anti-ballistic missiles. Taiwan is also integrating drones into artillery targeting and strengthening defensive positions on Penghu and elsewhere. The United States is expanding cooperation with Australia, Japan and other regional partners, while the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is currently in Thailand following an unusually long deployment heavily focused on the Middle East.

The balance remains clear. China holds the military initiative around Taiwan, particularly in the maritime domain. The current picture points toward sustained coercion, maritime normalization and development of blockade capabilities rather than imminent invasion. Over the next 7–14 days, continued Chinese Coast Guard and naval pressure is the most likely development.

This reminds me so much of Nazi Germany: if you are not one of us, you are the enemy. That mentality is always dangerous, regardless of who uses it or where it comes from.

Ukraine is destined to lose this war, and what rises afterward will be a new Ukraine, one that will be very different from the country we knew before. That is precisely why it is so important that we keep telling the truth and try to understand why the Russians are there in the first place.

The treatment of the Russian language is a clear example of why this matters. When a state starts punishing people for speaking their own native language, we should be asking serious questions about where that country is heading.

The figures being circulated are staggering: from September 1, parents can reportedly be fined if their children speak Russian at school, with fines of around $115 for a first offence and $268 for a subsequent offence. If the average Ukrainian salary is around $570 a month, those are not insignificant penalties.

This is exactly why we cannot simply accept the Western narrative that everything is black and white, that one side is entirely innocent and the other entirely guilty.

We need to understand the history, the language question, the politics and the forces that brought this war about.

Because if we refuse to understand those things, we are not seeking the truth. We are simply repeating propaganda.
