ICE ARRESTS ARE SURGING IN OKLAHOMA, AND LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT IS A BIG PART OF THE STORY

Oklahoma is on pace to more than double the number of immigration arrests made through the federal 287(g) program in 2026, according to new reporting from KOCO.

But what exactly is 287(g)?

Section 287(g) of federal immigration law allows ICE to enter into agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies. Officers who are selected, trained and certified can then perform certain immigration-enforcement functions under ICE supervision.

And Oklahoma’s participation has expanded.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, for example, entered into a 287(g) Task Force Model agreement with ICE that authorizes participating officers to perform specified immigration-enforcement functions.

This is important because immigration enforcement is no longer limited to federal ICE agents working independently. Through these agreements, state and local law enforcement can become part of the federal immigration-enforcement system.

That creates what ICE has historically described as a “force multiplier.”

The expansion is not unique to Oklahoma. Across the country, participation in 287(g) has grown dramatically, with state police, sheriff’s offices and other agencies entering agreements with ICE.

Supporters argue these partnerships allow federal, state and local agencies to work together more efficiently and help identify people who may be subject to removal.

Critics argue that expanding immigration authority to local police can blur the traditional line between local policing and federal immigration enforcement and potentially affect trust between law enforcement and immigrant communities.

Whatever side of the immigration debate you fall on, the numbers coming out of Oklahoma tell us something significant:

Immigration enforcement in the state is changing, and local law enforcement is increasingly becoming part of it.

This isn’t simply an increase in ICE activity.

It is an expansion of who is carrying it out.
