Lance Corporal Miguel Keith: A Marine Who Refused to Quit

Some heroes are remembered for the battles they won. Others are remembered for the lives they saved.

Lance Corporal Miguel Keith belongs among the greatest heroes in Marine Corps history.

On May 8, 1970, while serving as a machine gunner with Combined Action Platoon 1-3-2, Third Marine Amphibious Force in Quang Ngai Province, Republic of Vietnam, Lance Corporal Keith found himself in the middle of a desperate battle. His platoon was under attack by an enemy force that vastly outnumbered the Marines.

Early in the fight, Keith was seriously wounded.

For most men, those wounds would have ended the battle. For Lance Corporal Keith, they became another obstacle to overcome.

Ignoring his own injuries, he ran across fire-swept terrain to check the security of his platoon's defensive positions. Then, fully exposed to enemy fire, he unleashed devastating machine-gun fire that helped stop the advancing enemy.

When five enemy soldiers moved toward the platoon's command post, Keith charged directly at them, firing as he advanced. He killed three attackers and forced the remaining two to retreat.

Moments later, an enemy grenade exploded near him, throwing him to the ground and inflicting even more severe wounds.

Bleeding heavily and weakened by the loss of blood, Lance Corporal Keith refused to quit.

Seeing approximately twenty-five enemy soldiers massing for another assault, he did the unthinkable.

He attacked.

Charging into overwhelming odds, his aggressive assault and accurate fire killed four enemy soldiers and scattered the rest before they could launch their attack. During that final act of extraordinary courage, Lance Corporal Keith was mortally wounded.

His fearless actions played a decisive role in enabling his platoon to repel a numerically superior enemy force.

For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, Lance Corporal Miguel Keith was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, our nation's highest military decoration.

His sacrifice stands as a timeless reminder of what it means to be a United States Marine.
