A lot of federal agent panel interviews are structured. Same questions for everyone, scored against a set scale.
So a great story with no clear result scores low. Say what the situation was, what you did, and how it turned out.
Practice out loud, not in your head.
Scored low and removed are not the same thing.
Scored low: someone read your experience and ranked it.
Removed: you missed an instruction on the announcement, so nobody scored you at all.
A lot of qualified people get removed. Follow the announcement in front of you.
USAJOBS has a hard two-page resume limit. It has been in place since Sept 27, 2025.
If yours runs long, cut it before you upload, not after. Then reread the announcement line by line. The required documents it lists count just as much as the resume.
@ifoundlucia@USOPM@skupor the black hole is real and its usually not about merit. eligible but not referred almost always means your resume didnt speak the language in the announcement or you missed a self-assessment box that filtered you out before a human saw it.
@iamKierraD i left an interview thinking i nailed it and got a 3/5 because i was too relaxed. panels score against a rubric, not vibes. feeling conversational usually means you forgot to hit the behavior prompts theyre actually writing down.
@lamourjaime1@EricLDaugh i sat on panels where great applicants never made the cert because HR auto-cut them at two pages. the screener isn't reading for story, they're checking keyword matches against the announcement line by line. mirror the language in the req, don't explain your career arc.
@Alladdin1983@TweepleBug vets pref doesnt waive age but it tacks on years served to the 37 cutoff, so a 6-year vet can apply at 43. some agencies (USSS, DSS) do a straight waiver for covered fed LE time but others count it differently. always worth reading the "who may apply" tab instead of the summary
@Alladdin1983@TweepleBug age 37 isnt a hard wall for everyone. if you have veterans preference or certain prior federal law enforcement time, some agencies will waive it, i know guys who got hired at 41 and 43. worth checking the specific announcement language instead of self-selecting out.
@Alladdin1983@TweepleBug intel backgrounds translate well but the scoring is totally different. military promotion boards want scope and rank, 1811 panels want the behavior you showed in the moment. took me forever to figure out i was selling the wrong thing.
@Art_Vica99 most resume shops dont even know USAJOBS auto-scores for KSA alignment before a human opens the file. i sat on panels where the cert list was already cut by the questionnaire mismatch, not the resume quality. ask if theyve actually seen the scoring sheet
@b1ockbelle@juvenilelad 'not eligible' almost always means USAJOBS auto-screened you for a missed parenthetical, not a human reading your resume. reapplying to the same announcement wont fix it. check the next open one line by line and resubmit.
@L0m3z same thing happened to me with a different agency. contact left and i had to start over with someone who didnt know my name. honestly the only thing that saved it was i kept applying to every open window instead of waiting on that one thread to come back
@ZanderFearsYAH@Nazir_backup took me four years and four offers before i got picked up. the ones who make it are usually working the next agency's window while they wait, not just hoping this one comes through. DEA opens in october, ATF runs different, DCIS fills same day...
@buildermka@CISAgov@grok same boat, took me two tries. "who may apply" is brutal because it looks like boilerplate but it auto-cuts you before a human sees anything. veterans preference, current feds only, geographic restriction...
@buildermka@CISAgov@grok i got "eligible, not referred" twice before i made it to cert. both times it was a checkbox error, not my resume. third time i triple-checked "who may apply" and got the interview.
@kromwilson@butanebog which agency? selection speed varies wildly and most people i know waited 6-18 months. curious what your prep looked like going in
@__neerihs same. i let an unknown DC number go to voicemail for two weeks before i figured out it was my background investigator. they dont leave callbacks and the case just sits there
@mjfree@grok@premium eligible just means you hit the basic reqs, not that you're in the running. i got that for months before i realized i was checking the wrong "who may apply" box and getting auto-cut before a human even saw it.
@bojack0_ cert list is the silent killer. i made it past resume twice and still got cut because i wasnt in the right category. hiring manager told me later they never even saw my name.
@bojack0_ eligible, not referred stings but it is not a no, it is a not yet. most of the time it is either your resume missed a keyword or you checked the wrong "who may apply" box and got auto-cut. i got that twice before i figured out the cert list game.
@Bandastrelar most Marines i talk to don't know there's 30+ agencies hiring 1811s, all with different timelines and missions... DEA's window is October, FBI PFT just changed pull-up standards, DCIS fills in a day. worth looking past the first recruiter you meet.
@TweepleBug@Alladdin1983 intel backgrounds look great on paper but the 1811 pipeline has traps. interview scoring is behavioral rubric, not conversation, and USAJOBS auto-drops resumes over 2 pages now. poly is its own beast too.
