It is deeply unfortunate that the Prime Minister chose to mislead the nation rather than address it honestly.
Let me put this on record. Trinamool Congress has always championed higher political representation for women. We have the highest proportion of female elected representatives in both Parliament and the State Legislature. In the Lok Sabha, 37.9% of our elected members are women. In the Rajya Sabha, we have nominated 46% women members. The question of opposing Women's Reservation does not arise and never has.
What we are fundamentally opposed to is the Delimitation exercise that the Modi Government was plotting to push through by using women as a shield for its vested political agenda. What we are fundamentally opposed to is the altering of Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution, the division of this nation and the usurpation of power through gerrymandering, by redrawing political contours to hand greater representation to BJP-ruled states at the expense of others. This is an assault on federal democracy. And we will not watch it happen in silence.
If this government was genuinely serious about this noble cause, why did it wait nearly three years after the passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill on September 28, 2023? Why rush it through when several states are in election? And why couple it with Delimitation? Trinamool Congress has stood for women for decades. We will continue to. But we will not be lectured on a subject that the ruling dispensation neither understands nor respects.
And Mr. Prime Minister, the next time you address the nation, have the courage to do so from the Floor of Parliament, where you are subject to scrutiny, challenge and accountability. What you did yesterday was cowardly, hypocritical and fork-tongued. You can feel power slipping through your fingers. And you are prepared to go to any extent to hold on for just a little while longer.
That is all this was.
India needs to move towards One Nation, One Medical Treatment, where access to best medical care is available to all, regardless of income or influence.
That is exactly why I questioned the low health allocation in this Budget and demanded a relook in Parliament. In this Budget, health gets around 2% of total government expenditure, roughly ₹1 lakh crore. But the real gap is bigger.
Under the National Health Policy 2017, India committed to spending 2.5% of GDP on public health. In 2026, we are still at around 0.5% of GDP.We are nowhere near our own target.
Other countries understand the value of health spending. Kyonki jaan hai toh jahaan hai. The US spends around 18% of GDP on healthcare, the UK around 12%, Germany around 13%, and countries like Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, Japan and Spain spend around 10%.
The consequences are visible. Government hospitals are understaffed and under-equipped. Overworked doctors, too few beds, shortages of machines and medicines, and waiting dates that delay treatment.
When families cannot wait, they are pushed to excruciatingly expensive private hospitals. One health emergency then becomes a debt emergency.
Forget civic sense who designs roads like this? It’s a complete failure of engineering.
An underpass, an elevated flyover, or even a proper roundabout could have easily prevented this daily traffic jam.
Ironically, Green corridor were built to reduce congestion, yet this is the result. We must accept that we seriously lack planning skills when it comes to road infrastructure!
Leave Delhi, go in debt if you have to.
I used to think, how bad can the AQI really be for people in Delhi? I knew it was bad, but I never understood the scale because I didn’t feel it as drastically. I grew up in Delhi, studied here, and never felt a huge difference. You see people on the streets without masks, just walking around, and even people going for morning runs.
But I was wrong. It’s a crisis. And honestly, leaving this city should be your top priority. After living in London for a few years and breathing clean air, the moment I landed in Delhi I could literally taste and smell the pollution. Even AQI 200 hit me hard: sore throat, and a feeling like needles in my lungs. I could actually feel the pollution entering my body.
Please leave this city for your own sake. Buying a property here does not make sense either. Same for Mumbai. If you can, pack your bags and move yourself and your work somewhere else. I’ve cut my trip short and I’m leaving this city tomorrow.
