You have a point, Klopp’s Dortmund and Liverpool projects were incredible. But Atlético’s challenge was different. Breaking the Messi-Ronaldo dominance with a club that started well behind Madrid and Barça financially, while sustaining that level for 14+ years, is why I rate Simeone just as highly. Both deserve to be in the conversation.

Simeone earned Atlético the money to spend. Before him, we weren’t competing financially with Madrid or Barça. The club became a Champions League regular because of his success, and that revenue was reinvested into the squad. Comparing his resources to Guardiola’s, Ancelotti’s or even Klopp’s ignores where Atlético started.

People always say ‘any decent coach would do better,’ but where’s the proof? Before Simeone, Atlético were fighting just to qualify for Europe. Since he arrived: 2 La Liga titles in the Messi-Ronaldo era, 2 Champions League finals, multiple European trophies, and over a decade of consistent top-four finishes. Plenty of clubs have spent more than Atlético and achieved far less. His salary reflects what he’s built, not just what he’s doing today
