The Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure met today to have an Oversight of FEMA’s Disaster Readiness & Response.

I watched every excruciating minute of that session and took notes. Here’s the highlights: 🧵

👉🏼There were reports of citizens who openly supported Trump being skipped over by FEMA following Milton & an employee claims that the same practice was implemented while in areas impacted by Helene.
👉🏼FEMA released a “rumor control” page on their website claiming criticism of the federal response would discourage people from applying for aid.
👉🏼There are still areas in WNC that FEMA has not been on the ground to assess damages.
👉🏼FEMA was given 21.9 billion dollars and immediately obligated 8.8 to previously delayed projects. Taking their available funding for current storms down to $13 billion.
👉🏼FEMA has spent more than $1 billion housing illegal immigrants since 2019
👉🏼Titus blamed climate change for FEMA’s inability to appropriately respond to natural disasters.
👉🏼Biden submitted a $100 billion supplementary request to Congress yesterday which includes $40 billion dollars for FEMA
👉🏼The committee highlighted concerns that the current Administration has prioritized equity, climate change, and assistance to migrants over disaster victims.
👉🏼Larson acknowledged many WNC communities still do not have safe drinking water.
👉🏼For more than a month the SBA disaster fund has been empty. 11000 businesses have been approved for disaster loan assistance but will not receive any money until Congress makes funding available.
👉🏼Larson said misinformation resulted in armed threats against FEMA workers in WNC.
👉🏼47% of calls made to FEMA during the week of October 14th went unanswered and nearly half of the 260,000 Helene victims who applied for aid were denied.
👉🏼Edward’s said Helene was responsible for 230 deaths across 7 states - 102 of those in North Carolina.
👉🏼Economic damage in NC is estimated at $53 billion - only 5% of that damage is covered by insurance.
👉🏼FEMA’s primary responsibility is to coordinate federal emergency management efforts and support state and local officials with critical resources. Yet it took up to 3 days before there was any visibility of FEMA.
👉🏼The distribution of supplies by FEMA following Helene was inadequate.
👉🏼FEMA didn’t arrive in one WNC county until a week after the storm. It took 20 days to establish a disaster recovery center.
👉🏼FEMA failed to communicate effectively with local officials and residents of WNC.
👉🏼Following Helene, FEMA changed personnel without notifying local officials, had no shows for appointments/meetings, issued hotel vouchers for displaced families that could only be redeemed in locations up to two hours away from their jobs/schools, an inefficient inspection process, etc.
👉🏼Castor called for micro grids and solar panels instead of traditional electric grids as a solution to downed power following hurricanes.
👉🏼Criswell blamed criticism of FEMA’s response on misinformation and claimed they faced security issues due to misinformation spread on social media.
👉🏼Criswell admitted that one of her employees instructed 11 people below her to avoid homes with Trump signs in their yards. That employee was terminated.
👉🏼Criswell claimed the instance of political bias shown by the fired employee was not an indication of a larger cultural issue within FEMA.
👉🏼Perry stated the fired FEMA employee claimed she was following the orders of her superiors and that other similar claims have been made in NC.
👉🏼Criswell claimed there is nothing in FEMA’s training, policies, or procedures that would direct employees to skip disaster victims based on their political affiliation.
👉🏼Criswell agreed to request an investigation from the IG.

BREAKING: Second Border Patrol Agent BLOWS WHISTLE on Border Crisis: ‘My Conscience Will Be Clean, That’s Way More Important Than My Pension’

"The cartels run the border down here,” says Aaron Veckey, a United States Border Patrol agent with 19 years of service, stepping forward to expose the horrific conditions at the U.S.-Mexico border. Inspired by fellow whistleblower Zachary Apotheker (@ZachApotheker), featured in “Line in the Sand,” Veckey brings OMG onsite to his Customs and Border Protection patrol station in Ajo, Arizona, to reveal the disturbing truth.

“Where I first saw it [human rights violations] was here, underneath that canopy there,” Veckey shares. “It was just men, women, and children… They were freezing. It was at least 40 degrees.” He describes another instance of extreme conditions, adding, “You got 50 Muslims, 50 Sikhs, 50 Christians, 50 whatever, and they're fighting over shade.”

“If they have a thousand bodies for us, as fast as they can bring us bodies, we pick them up as fast and we push them all into this parking lot.” He adds, “They have pushed us around through fear, through browbeating us. They've ordered us to do stuff,” highlighting how U.S. Border Patrol agents are often forced between cartel operations and bureaucratic pressure to keep quiet.

Bringing these atrocities to the attention of the Office of Special Counsel (OSC), Veckey filed reports detailing the violations, only to be met with a cease and desist letter, ordering him to stay silent. Despite being ordered to remain silent, Veckey is sacrificing his future for justice.
