1916 Survivors’ Medal
Awarded to veterans of the Rising, 1916 Survivors’ Medal carried the image of a dying Cú Chulainn, tying the rebellion directly to symbolism that inspired a generation. The hero, now more than myth, represents defiance even in the face of certain death.
Margaret Pearse & boys of St Enda’s School.
After the executions in 1916, Margaret Pearse & her daughter Margaret Mary fought to preserve the vision of Scoil Éanna & its distinct Irish education. The school closed in 1935 & today survives as the Pearse Museum & St Enda’s Park.
Below Sheppard’s Cú Chulainn in the GPO stands the Proclamation of the Irish Republic with the names of the seven signatories.

Pearse believed the British education system to be an industrial “Murder Machine” designed to produce obedient workers & servants of Empire. He sought to create something different, using Irish mythology, poetry, language to shape a new generation of Irish identity.
The Pearse Brothers
In conversation before the Easter Rising. Teacher, poet and revolutionary leader Patrick Pearse stood alongside his younger brother Willie, an artist and sculptor trained under Oliver Sheppard.
Both would be executed at Kilmainham Gaol in May 1916.

Pearse as Teacher
Through Scoil Éanna, he sought to create distinctly Irish education rooted in mythology, history, poetry & national identity. Figures such as Cú Chulainn became central to his teaching philosophy, symbolising courage, sacrifice and idea of a heroic Irish past.
The Daly Family, 1901
Remarkable portrait of the Daly siblings before revolution reshaped their lives & Ireland. Deeply woven into Irish history. Kathleen Daly would marry Tom Clarke, while her brother Ned Daly would command the Four Courts garrison during the Easter Rising.
Casement to the Gallows
Roger Casement under guard in London before his execution in 1916. Once celebrated internationally for exposing atrocities in the Congo & Peru, he was convicted of treason for his role in seeking German support for the Easter Rising.

His barrister (below) was the Unionist MP James Chambers KC, who died the following year, shortly after his appointment as Solicitor-General for Ireland. Chambers' obituary in the Dublin Daily Express described him as "perhaps the most popular member of the Law Library... most approachable, and a diffident junior could always count on his advice and assistance in a matter of legal difficulty... His political opponents ever recognised his courtesy and conscientious fairness, toleration, and conspicuously straightforward methods of argument."
