🌡️ 30.1°C at Maison St Louis Observatory today — the earliest 30°C+ on record (previous: June 6, 1996 at 30.7°C). This also breaks the May temperature record of 28.9°C set on May 30, 2003. Marking an exceptional early-season temperature record. 🌡️
To put this in context for Jersey, our top 10 warmest years have all occurred since 1989, with the 5 warmest occurring in the last 14 years. In contrast, the coldest years in Jersey mostly occurred prior to 1923, with a notable warming trend through the last century.
Did it feel hot and sticky last night trying to sleep? Well Jersey has just had a 'tropical night' where the the air temperature doesn't drop below 20°C overnight. The lowest temperature at Maison St. Louis Observatory was in fact only 22.1°C!
With the temperature at Maison St. Louis having reached 28°C on Thursday, 31.5°C on Friday and already over 28°C today, we are officially in a heatwave. No chance of it lasting any longer though as westerly winds bring in much cooler weather from Sunday onwards.
Noticed a milky quality to the sky today? We believe that could be smoke from the Manitoba wildfires (all the way from Canada!) carried over by the jet stream. 🍁
The milky sky we've seen across the Channel Islands today is from wildfire smoke in the atmosphere, which has come all the way from Canada, over 4000 miles away! As a result the temperature and UV index have been subdued today, only reaching 17.2°C and 5 respectively in Jersey!
Things are expected to heat up next week as the wind aloft turns more SE'ly on Wednesday and again on Friday. This brings some very warm air over the Channel Islands, shown by the purple colours below, with temperatures expected to be in the mid to high 20's at times.
Heading into the water this weekend? Local sea temperature currently a little over 1°C above average for the time of year. Reports of more extreme sea temperatures around the British Isles show areas up to 4°C above the average! Current sea temperature at St Helier is 14.2°C 🌡️
