The Semitic names of God are descriptors for attributes (i.e. Elohim, El Shaddai, El Elyon, Yahweh/Jehovah etc), whereas the generic “God” is more of a reference to His position relative to us derived from proto-Indo-European. Although it has taken on the characteristic of a proper name in later derivatives (capital G), it can still be used to refer any number of spiritual entities.

Our modern names are simply transliterations of the ancient names. Just like Jesus is a transliteration from the Greek Ἰησοῦς which is a transliteration of the Hebrew Yehoshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ). A direct English transliteration from Hebrew is Joshua.

My point is Yahweh is an ancient word. It doesn’t need to be translated.

There is no ancient word for God that’s modern.

Yahweh in the Bible is El Shaddei.
That translates in English (the El of Violence)
