UPDATE: 5pm data suggest G4 conditions are still holding strong. Many have asked about "best" timing to see the northern lights. My advice is this- If it's dark, look northward. Find your local sunset time and add 1-2 hours for deeper darkness to fully develop. Good luck!
NOAA's forecast update tonight continues to call for G4 conditions to develop Thursday night. While their messaging suggests G4 is "likely", I'm intrigued they explicitly reference G5 conditions as "possible". That's pretty rare to see.
So, for argument's sake, what would that look like? The red image below is a loose representation of what G4 can look like. I've also attached a ballpark of what G5 (pink) can be capable of. Remember, each event is unique and they don't always present the same in terms of visibility. Maps below are better served as guidance, not gospel.
In terms of differences between G4 & G5, the latter can really drive the naked eye visibility southward. Folks across the Deep South are likely most affected. For northern states, it's probably not a huge difference in terms of overall visibility. On top of this, there are other nuances aside from the 4 vs. 5 label that can prove very important in terms of vibrance and visibility.
One way or another, Thursday night *could* be a memorable one. If viewing the northern lights remains on your bucket list, I encourage you to pay attention to trends. I'll be on it & out there with a camera. Here's hoping NOAA is right!
HERE WE GO! A "Severe" G4 geomagnetic storm is in the forecast Thursday night. This is quite the rare event and has at least a shot at reaching G5 levels. These events are like snowflakes, no two are the same. With that in mind, the below map is a loose representation of what G4 storms are capable of from a viewing perspective.
More to come!
