Today is #WorldAlzheimersDay, which is marked every year on September 21st. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of #Alzheimer’s disease and other types of #dementia.
This year’s theme is ‘never too early, never too late’, which focuses on risk factors and risk reduction.
Statement from our CEO @andrewmheff :
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland welcomes the announcement from Minister for Mental Health and Older People @MaryButlerTD, today, regarding funding for the development of Memory Services across Ireland.
There is significant evidence that diagnosis at a Memory Clinic enhances the journey of dementia and ensures signposting to appropriate services. Timely diagnosis is an ongoing issue for people living with dementia and this is of increased importance with the recent development of disease modifying therapies which require early diagnosis.
Most importantly for our organisation this announcement is evidence of robust funding for a critical element of the Model of Care for Dementia in Ireland. This Model can only succeed with funding for implementation, and today's announcement shows meaningful commitment from Government. I know there are people affected by dementia in communities throughout Ireland who are struggling today and every day.
We at The ASI will continue to advocate for increased supports and we know this announcement may not change your life but we believe it is a hopeful and heartening first step on the road to the Model of Care for Dementia in Ireland.

Physical activity is important for #brainhealth and has been shown to reduce the risk of dementia. It’s #NeverTooEarly, or #NeverTooLate to get active. Adults should aim for 150 minutes of exercise a week; this equates to a brisk 30min walk, 5 days a week #WAM#UnderstandTogether
On World Alzheimer's Day, we're overjoyed to share the video of Bríd and Vincent's Vow Renewal, Bríd - who lives with Alzheimer’s disease - and her primary carer Vincent celebrated 60 years of marriage with a ceremony at The ASI’s Curlew Road Day Care Centre in Drimnagh on September 15th.
