Tactically, I would pick 2010/11 Barcelona.
Not because PSG aren’t good enough they absolutely are but because Barca possess the one thing that historically causes problems for every great pressing team
They can dominate the ball better than PSG can.
PSG’s biggest weapon
Luis Enrique’s PSG are built around
Extreme positional rotations.
Aggressive counter-pressing.
A fluid 3-2-5 structure in possession.
Constant movement from Dembele, Kvaratskhelia, Doué, Vitinha and Neves.
High pressing and fast ball recoveries.
Against most teams, PSG suffocate opponents because they force mistakes high up the pitch and then attack immediately before the defense can reset.
The problem PSG would face
Barcelona 2011 were probably the hardest team in football history to press.
Their entire midfield structure was designed to play through pressure, Ask Man Utd in the Final of UCL chasing shadows.
Busquets receives under pressure and escapes it.
Xavi dictates tempo.
Iniesta carries the ball through compact blocks.
Messi drops into midfield and creates overloads.
The key battle isn’t Messi vs PSG’s defenders.
It’s PSG press vs Barca’s buildup.
And I think Barca win that battle easily. We’re talking about arguably the greatest trio in football Busquet - Iniesta - Xavi, all press resistant
Luis Enrique’s PSG defend with coordinated pressing and compact spacing.
But Messi’s false-nine role creates a big problem
If PSG’s center-back follows him, Villa and Pedro attack the space behind.
If nobody follows him, Messi receives between the lines and turns.
That exact problem made teams look helpless in 2011.
The moment Messi drops, PSG’s midfield triangle has to decide
Stay compact and allow Messi space.
Step out and open channels for runners.
Either choice creates danger. Because it’s Messi we’re talking about here.
It won’t be one-sided game. PSG can hurt Barca too, PSG’s front line is
Faster.
More athletic.
More dangerous in transition.
Kvaratskhelia attacking Dani Alves’ side would be terrifying.
Dembele running at a high defensive line would create chances.
Neves and Vitinha have the energy to press for 90 minutes.
In transition, PSG may actually be superior to Barca too.
Many people focus on the forwards but the real battle is in Midfield.
Will really be nice to see a Xavi-Busquets-Iniesta vs Vitinha-Joao Neves-Fabián Ruiz.
Vitinha and Neves are phenomenal.
But Xavi-Busquets-Iniesta is arguably the greatest midfield trio ever assembled.
Their ability to keep possession and manipulate space remains unmatched.
That’s where I think Barcelona slowly take control.
My tactical verdict
If they play 10 times:
Barcelona win 5
PSG win 3
Draws 2
If it’s one Champions League final
Barcelona probably wins.
PSG would probably have the better transitions and more athleticism.
Barcelona would have
Better control.
Better midfield.
Better ball retention.
Prime Messi.
PSG don’t have Prime Messi, I don’t think they will win.
