Most of the physical universe cannot be detected directly by human senses.

Human vision is limited to a narrow range of the electromagnetic spectrum, approximately 380 to 770 nanometers, which we call visible light. However, electromagnetic radiation extends far beyond this range. At longer wavelengths than red light are infrared, microwaves, and radio waves. At shorter wavelengths than violet are ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.

Other species perceive parts of this spectrum that humans cannot. For example, bees can see ultraviolet patterns, and some snakes can detect infrared radiation. Compared to these animals, human vision covers only a small portion of the available information.

Human hearing is also limited, typically between 20 hertz and 20,000 hertz. Frequencies below this range are called infrasound, and frequencies above it are ultrasound. Elephants use infrasound for long-distance communication, while bats and dolphins use ultrasound for echolocation.
