Another doodle!!
I began this one during the course of an exhibition, at which I was demonstrating my techniques ... and it sort of just grew from the middle outwards - I began with the rose.
The final additions were the little Holly blue butterflies.
I adore these little chaps! Of the many blue butterflies which grace the English countryside, the Holly blue is the most easily identified, the only one with an entirely blue underside to the wings, delicately speckled with tiny black dots. Also the easily spotted black and white wing edges of the male are a giveaway. They have joyful fluttering flight between flowers, and are also unique in that their caterpillars feed on two different foodstuffs depending on whether they are the offspring of the spring or autum flight. Spring caterpillars feed on holly and autumn on ivy. This gave them the misleading, ideosyncratic folkname of the Christmas butterfly.
Blue butterflies are heavily tied to folklore, often symbolizing love, transformation, and good luck. Because of their vibrant, unusual color, they are frequently viewed as spiritual messengers, symbols of the soul, or indicators of magic and joy across different cultures. Remnants of Irish village folklore suggest that seeing a blue butterfly is extremely fortuitous events ... so, go buy that lottery ticket!
